Our April 19 COP Discussion:
Lymphomas and Hepatitis C

At our April 19 Community of Practice, we discussed Lymphomas associated with elderly Hepatitis C patients and extrahepatic manifestations in HEPC virus infections. If you missed it, we welcome you to watch the recording of our discussion by clicking HEREClick here and here to read articles related to our discussion.

Meeting as our Community of Practice creates our regular touch point, strengthening knowledge and relationships between those of us fighting to eradicate HCV from Virginia.

Our next COP event will be on Wednesday, May 17 at 4 pm.

Please send any case studies you would like to review to hepc@sentara.com. These help everyone learn and grow in practice.

Screen for Hepatitis B and C at least once in a lifetime for all adults

On March 10, 2023, the CDC updated the recommendations for hepatitis B screening and testing to include screening for all adults at least once in their lifetime. This aligns with the current hepatitis C screening recommendations. These recommendation updates increase awareness, prevention and linkage to care while decreasing the stigmas associated with risk-based screening. See full details here.

Learn more about testing in honor of National Hepatitis Testing Day on May 19

When a person tests positive or reactive for the hepatitis C antibody, it means they have been infected with the hepatitis C virus at some point in time. A follow up test, hepatitis C PCR/ RNA test is needed to see if the virus is in their blood. If that test shows the virus is detected in their blood, they will need treatment. If it shows the virus is undetected, then they do not need treatment and are not able to spread the virus. Once a patient has been treated for hepatitis C, they will always need a PCR to test for re-infection. Click here for more information by the CDC.
Remember our RedCap link to refer patients positive for HCV

Our network's efforts to increase screening is paying off! We are uncovering more and more HCV cases. But sometimes those who are doing the testing can't do the treatment. That's when you use our RedCap link.

Referral for hepatitis C Treatment- patient self referral or clinics referring patients:

Remember...

• HCV CAN BE CURED in as little as 8 weeks with a once-daily pill (minimal to no side effects).
• Medicaid no longer requires HCV prescriptions to be sent to specialty pharmacies.
• HCV can be spread through snorting drugs as well as IV drug use with unsterile equipment.
Thank you for your support of Virginia HEPC! We can't wait to connect with you and help your community move toward being hepatitis C FREE!
