UVA jointly accredited for continuing education

We are delighted to share the wonderful news that UVA has been officially designated as “Jointly Accredited for Interprofessional CE” that enables us to provide a broad range of interprofessional continuing health professional education. UVA CME and the School of Nursing have worked collaboratively for a number of years, through which we offer AMA Category 1 credit, MOC credits and ANCC credit through our accreditation by the ACCME. Case study calls help you treat with confidence
Our monthly ECHO sessions continue to help providers delve deeper into treatment questions, building capacity to treat HCV in different situations.  On August 18, Virginia Leavell of Addiction Allies led a conversation about treating for the syndemic of both HCV and opioid use disorder. We welcomed some new participants as we discussed the challenges of treating both drug use and HCV, considering options and community partnerships.

In September, we will discuss another more complex treatment situation- pediatrics. Please join us to learn more, and take a look at the schedule of upcoming topics below.

More about the ECHO Series

The monthly call is conducted through the ECHO system on the third Wednesday of every month from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Registration for ECHO is only required once, you will then have access to all content and to future sessions.

Virginia Project ECHO (Extension for Community Health Outcomes) is a unique platform that leverages learning, training and practice support to give voice to knowledge across Virginia and beyond. Virginia HEPC has made it our core platform for our learning collaborative because it is designed to increase everyone's ability to manage complex health care problems, share best practices, and collaborate to best utilize resources to prevent disease and keep people safe in Virginia.
Our August HEPC hero is Patrice Ross. She has been with Virginia HEPC since March of 2019. Patrice is with the patient from their referral in the originating clinic, their telemedicine appointments with HEPC, understanding how long the medication will take to get to them, when to take it and when to call for a refill. Behind the scenes she communicates with the staff at clinics, specialty pharmacies, and insurance companies, making sure the patients are approved. She has grown from helping to plan training conferences to being a part of them.

Patrice took a leap of faith in coming to this position from the ambulatory care setting. She accepted the challenge to go outside of her comfort zone in many ways to help ensure patients in Southwest Virginia were able to obtain access to treatment for hepatitis C. She continues to make a huge impact on increasing access across the state.

Patrice is returning to college starting this week to pursue her RN degree. She will continue working with the HEPC team and our patients as she expands her abilities to make a positive impact on healthcare. Thank you Patrice, for being a HEPC Hero!

International Overdose Awareness day is August 31

International Overdose Awareness Day seeks to end overdose, remember without stigma those who have died, and acknowledge the grief of the family and friends left behind.

Did you know that Region 10 offers free virtual REVIVE overdose reversal training on the 2nd Wednesday of each month? They can also provide free Narcan to anyone who has completed this training. The next training will be held on September 8, from 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM, email revive@regionten.org to register.

August is National Immunization Awareness Month

With a focus on immunizations to stop the spread of the pandemic and for National Immunization Awareness Month, it's a good time to remember that your patients at risk for hepatitis C also need to be immunized against hepatitis A and hepatitis B. Learn more HERE.

Increase Testing to Know More Hepatitis

Last year, the Centers For Disease Control expanded recommendations to include screening all adults for hepatitis c. This year, the focus is on getting that word out, especially to primary care provider offices. If you'd like posters or other promotional materials to encourage more conversations about HCV testing, visit the CDC page HERE

Remember...

• HCV CAN BE CURED in as little as 8 weeks with a once-daily pill (minimal to no side effects).
• Medicaid does NOT require drug testing.
• HCV can be spread through snorting drugs as well as IV drug use.
Thank you for your support of Virginia HEPC! We can't wait to connect with you and help your community move toward being hepatitis C FREE!
