Inaugural 5K Run / 2K Walk at GC42!

The Alvin Dixon Memorial Run and Walk will be held during an extended lunch break of General Council 42 on Sunday, August 9. Participants will be invited to run 5 km or walk 2 km, and all others – commissioners and people across the church alike – are encouraged to sponsor one of the runners or walkers to raise money for the Alvin Dixon Memorial Bursary Fund.

The Alvin Dixon Memorial Bursary Fund supports Aboriginal education and was established at the United Church Foundation in honour of Alvin Dixon who died of cancer in 2014. Alvin was a beloved member of the General Council Executive, chair for many years of the Indigenous Justice and Residential Schools Steering Committee (and a residential school survivor himself), a leader in the church and the Aboriginal community in BC, and a runner. Jim White, another member of the Executive and a cousin of Alvin’s, has agreed to be the Grand Marshal for the run, and to drop the flag to start it off. Pledges can be made through CanadaHelps.

Please visit the United Church Foundation website for more information on the fund itself.
