So many exciting things have been happening in the Bali Life Children’s Home of late. Amongst the excitement was the start of the new education year which started in July. This time was also the start of a new school for many of our children. The children are enjoying their studies and expanding their knowledge through the new Indonesian curriculum and great teachers!
We were also so grateful for the visit from Bali Kids Foundation to the Street Centre to administer checks on the children in our centre. We are always grateful for the motivation of Bali Kids Foundation to keep children healthy and we really value our partnership with Bali Kids Foundation. Thanks again!
Boys Camping and Girls Night Out
With great excitement, in July, our boys set off to Lake Danau for a night of camping, whilst the girls set off to Canggu for a night 'camping' in a friend’s villa!
Both groups had a blast.
Campfires, sharing, orienteering and mud pit fights were amongst the fun activities for the boys, while the girls enjoyed swimming, fitness, relaxing, manicures/pedicures and sharing! It was a great family bonding time and lots of fun!
Women’s Centre and Kidzone
The Women's Centre has continued to expand and reach more women and children in the local community. Our current classes on offer for the women are sewing, computer, exercise and English. A couple of English classes are held in a hairdressing salon and at the women's homes.
We are excited to announce that Kidzone is now up and running, full steam ahead. Kidzone includes two children's English classes at the Centre per week and a Friday afternoon Kids Club, which involves outdoor fun activities. We have about 40 children altogether in the English classes and 25 children coming to the Kids Club. Kidzone is a fantastic program that the children love!
We have also recently began monthly workshops for the women in the community. So far the themes have been focused on 'Beauty on the Inside and Outside'. Both workshops attracted over 30 women altogether. Due to some wonderful volunteers we were able to provide a make up demonstration, exercise and yoga, French cooking, health discussion with a midwife. We provided childcare so the women could relax and enjoy the afternoon.
Street Kids Centre and Women’s Workshop
It is a great pleasure to share that the Street Kids Centre and Women’s Workshop is now in full swing and growing rapidly. After initial teething problems, it is successfully developing. We have a regular group of 27 kids attending and 8 mums. This program is serving children who beg on the street, as well as children from a dump site area nearby.
The informal school continues to be a great success with our two motivated teachers. The school bus (the street van) leaves the Centre every morning and comes back full of smiley kids ready to learn. We have 3-4 kids who are excited to do their formal schooling certificate so they can pursue further education into the future.
Our Women’s Workshop is a program for the mums of the kids to come and work to gain a wage. This wage then means their kids don’t have to work on the streets or in the trash site. We have businesses who place orders and the mums make the orders and gain their wage.
Currently the women are skilled in making handicrafts and jewellery, but soon we will launch a crowd funding campaign to have a one-month sewing course for the women so we can start sewing projects.
Do you have a business and would like some things made by our women? If this is you please email our Centre manager Gregoria at email@example.com.
Indonesian Independence Day
On August 17, we celebrated Indonesian Independence Day. We hosted a big party and invited our friends to celebrate with us. We had games such as slip 'n' slide, obstacle courses, food, prizes and more. We enjoyed all the festivities to celebrate this event!
Sahabat Anak National Jamboree
On August 30-31, four of our children, along with two staff members flew to Jakarta and participated in the National Jamboree. They were invited by Yayasan Sahabat Anak
to participate in the jamboree. It was a lot of fun and a great experience for our children. The children helped with the dance and prayer for the opening ceremony of the 2-day camp.
The children then participated in different workshops, including planting chilli trees, painting and playing angklung (a traditional musical instrument). We were gifted from Yayasan Sahabat Anak with books and computers for our Foundation. It was a wonderful weekend for the attendees and we were so honoured to attend the jamboree. Thank you to Yayasan Sahabat Anak for this opportunity and we look forward to this partnership continuing into the future.
It is with deep sadness, we share that Ibu Norma, our previous house mum, passed away on September 7,
after battling cancer. This news came with deep sorrow amongst our Bali Life family. To help with the grieving process, we celebrated her life through a small and intimate memorial service held in our home. We send our love to Pak Eko and Carin (her husband and daughter) at this hard time, as well as the rest of Ibu Norma’s family and friends. Ibu Norma will be missed and forever loved. RIP Ibu Norma.
We have new wheels! With heartfelt gratitude, we would like to thank Blue Illusion
for running a fundraiser for a new bus, to transport our growing family. We are so happy with our bus and it is so helpful for our Foundation and is really comfortable too! We thank Blue Illusion for their constant support for our Foundation.
It is our pleasure to welcome 2 new children into our home, Gede and Evan. Gede joins us from Denpasar and Evan joins us from Sumba. These two boys are already settling in well and enjoying life at Bali Life. We are excited that our family is always growing and we love all of our children.
It is also our pleasure to welcome 3 new staff into our Bali Life team.
Ketut and Sri are husband and wife and join us in the Street Kids Centre team. They are fully-qualified teachers and are both teaching the children that come to our Centre. We love their hearts for the children and their fun personalities are enjoyed by all. We are so grateful that Ketut and Sri have joined us and they are valuable members of our Street Centre team. Welcome guys!
Claudia also joins our Street Kids Centre staff team. She is our new Women’s Workshop Coordinator. Claudia has already helped in recruiting more women for our program, as well as new customers for the crafts that are made. Claudia’s gentle and loving personality is well received by all and she is a valuable member of our team. Welcome Claudia!
