Four Thought Friday

Four Thought Friday

Happy Friday! We made it. Here is your weekly digest including four of my most pondered thoughts, this week:
1. Something I'm reading --
The research is clear: teacher engagement and teacher effectiveness lead to student engagement. Student engagement directly and positively affects behavior, attendance, and academic achievement. When I see research indicating 57% of teachers are disengaged, I am saddened but not entirely surprised. What are your thoughts? Is this a problem? If so, should it be solved? And how?

2. Something I'm watching --
If you're not "sold" on the use of video in the classroom yet, read this research, then check out CrashCourse on YouTube. CrashCourse offers a multitude of educational and engaging videos and video-based courses for almost every content area. And since the videos are hosted on YouTube, they are easy to assign through Google Classroom or EdPuzzle.

3. A tool I'm using --
GradeProof offers automated spelling, grammar and rephrasing corrections to improve your writing. According to their website, it is "just like a spellchecker, but on steroids." GradeProof works as a Google Docs add-on, iOS app, and website, allowing users to proofread various document types. The best part; however, is being able to claim your writing was reviewed by artificial intelligence.

4. Something I'm listening to --
Akimbo, a new podcast from Seth Godin, is named for an ancient word, from the bend in the river or the bend in an archer's bow. According to Godin, this bend is a "symbol for strength, a posture of possibility, the idea that when we stand tall, arms bent, looking right at it, we can make a difference."
The podcast is "about our culture and about how we can change it. About seeing what's happening and choosing to do something." Let's do something, together!
