Four Thought Friday

June 15, 2018
Happy Friday! This week, I've clearly been focused on taking a break and enjoying the summer. As always, please be sure to click the Past Issues button above, to check out our previous issues. Enjoy!
1. Music I'm enjoying —
I love music. I especially appreciate artists who successfully traverse the boundaries of genre - one of the reasons so many are fascinated by the music in the show, Westworld. This week, I discovered NHK Blends, a YouTube channel featuring contemporary pop and rock songs performed with traditional Japanese instruments. Before you scroll on, be sure to check out Michael Jackson's Smooth Criminal including the jūshichi-gen or AC/DC's Back in Black featuring the shime-daiko.
2. A song I'm rediscovering —
There are so many lessons we can absorb from the legend and lore of the Beatles. (Side note: If you want to learn how you can improve school culture through the filter of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, be sure to read my friend Sean Gaillard's new book, "The Pepper Effect." It's a true masterpiece.)

This week, Open Culture published an article called Hear Eric Clapton’s Isolated Guitar Track From the Beatles’ ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’ (1968) and I jumped all over it. "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is one of my favorite Beatles songs and listening to the isolated contribution of Eric Clapton truly made my ears smile.
3. A podcast episode that got me thinking —
Simplify is an excellent podcast that I highly recommend; however, a recent episode definitely got me thinking more than usual. Check out the episode, "Simplify Luck: Janice Kaplan On How To Engineer Good Fortune" to hear what I'm talking about.
4. A video I'm watching —
Calm is the mindfulness meditation app I've previously recommended. In this video, titled ‘How to Find the Calm Within the Chaos,’ Calm instructor, Tamara Levitt discusses three ways mindfulness can help us cope with the stress and turmoil of modern life. Great tips for those of us about to embark on the de-stressing exercise, called summer.
If you'd like to discuss any of the above "thoughts" or have some suggestions, please send a tweet to @techcoachz. Be sure to include the hashtag #FourThoughtFriday!
