Next events 

Journey to Australia and New Zealand
 
The Coordinator of the Latin America - Asia Pacific Observatory, Dr. Ignacio Bartesaghi, will visit Australia and New Zealand between 31 August and 12 September 2015. The Coordinator will visit the city of Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney, and Auckland.
 
Annual Nineteenth Congress of the International Studies Mexican Association, AMEI
 
The Coordinator of the Latin America – Asia Pacific Observatory, Dr. Ignacio Bartesaghi, will participate in the “XIX Congreso anual de la Asociación Mexicana de Estudios Internacionales”, AMEI called: “Cultura, gobernanza y globalización: la crisis de las instituciones en un mundo complejo”.  The event will be held from 15 to 17 October 2015 at the facilities of the Cancún Center, in Cancún, Quintana Roo, México.



Outstanding activities


Fifth National Meeting of ABRI
 
The Coordinator of the Observatory, Dr. Ignacio Bartesaghi, participated in the 5to Encuentro Nacional de ABRI. Such meeting was held in the city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, in campus Corazón Eucarístico of the PUC Minas from 29 to 31 July 2015.
 
“A rapprochement to the BRICS in the Twenty-First Century”
 
The Coordinator of the Latin America – Asia Pacific Observatory, Dr. Ignacio Bartesaghi,  participated, as the chairman, in the event: “Un acercamiento a los BRICS en el Siglo XXI” held on 12 August, at 4:30 p.m., at the Uruguayan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
 
Working Meeting: “International trade agreements and incentives for the productive integration” and 70th Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia
 
The Coordinator of the Latin America – Asia Pacific Observatory, Ignacio Bartesaghi, will participate in the working meeting: “Los acuerdos comerciales internacionales y los incentivos para la integración productiva”, held on 24, 25 and 26 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Such event was co–organized by the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF) and Universidad Tres de Febrero.
 
On the other hand, the Coordinator of the Observatory participated in the celebration of the 70th Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia, held on Friday, 21 August 2015, from 12:30 a.m. to 15:00 p.m., at the residence of the Ambassador of Indonesia in Buenos Aires.


Sixth International Conference of the Red Latinoamericana de Economía Social de Mercado
 
The Coordinator of the Latin America – Asia Pacific Observatory, Dr. Ignacio Bartesaghi,  participated in the Sixth International Conference of the Red Latinoamericana de Economía Social de Mercado called: “Voluntad política en Latinoamérica para una Economía Social de Mercado: Limitaciones institucionales e ideológicas de los modelos neoliberales y socialistas en la región”.
 

China and a historic devaluation of the yuan

“This is the economic news of the month, maybe of this part of the year: just a few days ago, China devaluated its currency 4,4% in comparison with the dollar, the greatest devaluation since 1994. The Central Bank of the second largest economy justified it arguing that it seeks the currency rate “coherent with the conditions of the market”.

La República Popular de China y América Latina: impacto del crecimiento económico chino en las exportaciones latinoamericanas
This work by the ECLAC estimates the income elasticity of the Latin-American exports into the People’s Republic of China for a set of 17 countries of the region, where the dynamic aspects of the exports are taken into account, apart from considering the control variables usually indicated in the literature of the international trade. China en América Latina y el Caribe: Escenarios estratégicos subregionales
Such publication done by the Development Bank of Latin-America (CAF) is a useful attempt to contribute to the construction of a long-term agenda in the economic relations of Latin America with China. (Publication in spanish).

Corea y América Latina y el Caribe: Hacia una relación diversa y dinámica
The Sector of Integration and Trade of the Inter-American Development Bank (BID) presented the publication dealing with trade, investments, and cooperation between both regions. (Publication in spanish).
 

Rising concentration in Asia-Latin American value chains. Can small firms turn the tide?

The ECLAC publishes a book that presents a selection of studies prepared within the context of a project about the potential role of the small and medium size business in the value chains of Asia and Latin America. Publishers: Nanno Mulder, Osvaldo Rosales and Keiji Inoue.

Expanding and Diversifying Uruguayan Exports into Asia using Australia
 
The Embassy of Australia in New Zealand presents a publication about the opportunities for Uruguayan milk industries in Australia held by the ANIP of the Australian National University.

Chile week in China will celebrate the 45 years of diplomatic relations with a view to the future

During eight days the 45 years of establishment of diplomatic relations with China were celebrated. With events in Shanghái and Beijing, sundry representatives of our country will hold meetings in the “Chile Week China”, from 21 to 28 August 2015. Further information about the activities to be held and the relevant agents that will participate in this large meeting are included in the following note. (News in spanish).

The Pacific Alliance and the Multilatinas: Rapprochement Strategies to Asia Pacific

The event was held on 19 and 20 August at the Centro de Estudios Asia Pacífico of the Universidad EAFIT. (News in spanish).

Essays Contest about South Korea

The Centro de Estudios Coreanos of the Instituto de Relaciones Internacionales de la Universidad Nacional de La Plata and the Escuela de Estudios Orientales de la Universidad del Salvador, with the organizing committee of the celebration of the 50 Anniversary of the Korean immigration into Argentina, call advanced students and University graduates to participate in the Essays Contest about South Korea. Dr. Hong Song will give three conferences related to several aspects of the current Chinese economy

The Center of Studies China – Mexico will hold a series of conferences about different issues about the relation Mexico – China. (News in spanish).

 
Agreements and negotiations

Meeting of TPP Ministers ends

After almost four days of intensive talks among the ministers of trade of the countries making up the Transpacific Agreement (TPP), important agreements were reached regarding: investments, financial services environment, public procurement, among other areas. Notwithstanding, there are still matters requiring additional work for reaching the conclusion of the TPP as a whole. (News in spanish).

“The TPP is crucial for the prosperity and stability of the region of Asia Pacific. Whereas the countries did not manage to conclude the negotiations in Maui, due to the differences about the market access, each one of us made an enormous effort, and worked hard for the progress of the negotiations”.

Groser disappointed TPP deal not reached

The Minister of Trade, Tim Groser, is sorry that the negotiations of the TPP were not concluded, but the Ministers of the TPP collectively committed themselves to meet again as soon as possible in order to conclude the agreement.

TPP talks make significant progress

“Meaningful increases were made this week in the negotiations for the largest regional trade agreement in the world” said today the Minister of Trade and Investments of Australia Andrew Robb.

China supersedes United Kingdom as the main destination of Chilean wines

The Asian markets are growing in the last months steadily as consumers of Chilean wines. But now, for the first time, China superseded the United Kingdom as the main destination of the national grape juice. According to the last figures of the Wines of Chile related to June, our country exported to China 609 thousand boxes of bottled wine. (News in spanish).

Colombia and China reinforce their tourism relations

The Vice-Minister of Tourism, Sandra Howard Taylor, had a meeting in Bogotá with a Touristic Commission in the city of Hangzhou (China), which visits the country in search of the promotion of its metropolitan area as a touristic destination for the Colombian citizens, apart from reinforcing the relations regarding tourism between both nations. Opening of the market of Myanmar for bovine and poultry meat

The Brazilian Government received with satisfaction the decision of the authorities of Myanmar to accept the International Certificates of Health of bovine and poultry meat proposed by Brazil, after the joint efforts of the Ministries of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, and Foreign Affairs. The depreciation of the yuan increases the pressure on a Latin-America in  slowdown

The decision of China to depreciate the yuan, which accumulates a depreciation of  3,5 % in two days increases the pressure on the economies of Latin America since it will reduce its exports of raw materials and its foreign currency income, according to analysts consulted by Efe.
