Placement Writing Assessment- 5th Grade Only

The fifth grade Placement Writing Assessment (PWA) will be administered to all fifth grade students on Monday, March 6 and Tuesday, March 7.

Results of the PWA are one component utilized in sixth grade placement for A Enriched Language Arts (A-ELA) and Affective Cognitive Enrichment (ACE) classes for the fall of 2023.  The PWA is not used as a part of a child’s current  grade.

The Placement Writing Assessment is:

  • Designed as a pre-assessment by William & Mary University

  • Measures prerequisite skills necessary to be successful in the middle school ELA and ACE courses

  • Aligned to Common Core State Standards for writing and for literature. The rubric assesses each student’s ability to use claim and opinion writing, support, elaboration, and conclusion.

The PWA is an in-person assessment. Students will be administered the assessment in two parts which will be administered over the course of two days. Students with an IEP/504 will be given the accommodations specifically listed in their plans.

The assessment will be scored by multiple teachers from grades five and six. Once all student work from the Placement Writing Assessment is scored, your child’s score will be communicated via Skyward.

If you have any questions about the PWA please contact your child’s teacher.

Elm School and District News

Thank you for your support of the Destination Imagination/The Golden League's Bernie's Book Bank Drive!  We did a rough estimate of the books collected for Bernie's Book Bank, and I'm happy to announce that over 4,100 books were collected.

Again, thank you so much for your support.  The Golden League students truly appreciate the success of this book drive!  We can't wait for Bernie's Book Bank to share these books with the students/children in the Chicagoland, and we hope they will enjoy the books as much as our children did!
