Fifth Grade Parent Night Invite

Dear Future HMS Families:
Whether you are sending us your first child, the next one in line, or your very last Spartan to Hinsdale Middle School, we are excited about the opportunity to have your child at HMS next year! The end of one school year is an exciting time, and also a time to start thinking about the next one. 

On Tuesday, May 24th, at 6 PM, Hinsdale Middle School will be hosting a “Future 6th Grade Parent Night” to welcome you to HMS, answer questions, and provide information about our school. Please enter on the parking deck side, and join us in the cafetorium for a half hour overview of our school. Unfortunately, the building will not be open for touring this evening, and bringing your 5th grader is optional. We hope to see you there! 

During that same week, your 5th grader will be visiting us at HMS. On Tuesday, May 24th, The Lane and Oak will be visiting, and on Friday, May 27th, Elm and Madison will be visiting. We look forward to showing them around, and welcoming them to HMS.

Course Placement for Fall 2022

MAP scores have traditionally been utilized as one component of math course placement in elementary and middle school as well as in language arts and social studies placement in middle school. The placement criteria for fall 2022 are available on the Advancement & Acceleration section of the D181 website under the header of “Placement Criteria (2022-2023).” Placement determinations will be communicated to families during the week of May 23rd. Finally, if you anticipate that your child will qualify for Summer Math Bridge, please note that this program is planned to take place between June 8 - June 28, 2022. A full list of D181 program dates is available on D181 Board Docs (January 13, 2022).



Incoming Kindergarten Information

On May 31 and June 1 all incoming kindergarten students will be screened in early literacy, early numeracy, and fine motor skill development. The screening process will take approximately 30 minutes and will be held at Oak Elementary School in the preschool wing. The screening assessment will be completed one-on-one with a D181 staff member who all are very experienced with young children. Most of the activities students will participate in are verbal and intended to not be stressful.  More information will be sent closer to the screening dates on the procedure for entering the building and where parents/guardians will wait. 

All incoming kindergarten students will take part in the screening as a way to identify student needs and where to begin instruction in the fall. We are asking you to sign up for a screening time for your child.  You may select your date and time for May 31 or June 1, 2022.  It is important to sign up for a time early and to attend, as classroom placements will only be sent to parents for students who have completed the screening assessment. Elm School and Area News
  • Summer School Registration:
         The session runs from June 8-June 28 at Hinsdale Middle School. 
         The deadline to register is May 27, 2022.

From The Library:

**All Elm library books were due on Friday, May 20th.  Please help your children to return their books as soon as possible.**


Summer Book Bags

Students in grades K- 5 are invited to check out books from the Elm School library to read during the summer! There are so many benefits from reading that we want to make sure students have great books to read.

  • Each student may check out up to ten books.
  • Books and the bag are due on Friday, August 26th.
  • Just as we expect you to take good care of the books you check out during the school year, we expect you to take good care of books you take with you for the summer.
  • You are responsible for the cost to replace any lost or damaged books.
  • There is a $1.00 fee if the bag is not returned in August. We will use the bags again next year.
  • Students who have returned all books or paid for lost books may check out books. 
  • 5th graders may also check out books. They will need to make arrangements to return them. This is an especially good opportunity for students who do not have a public library card.
  • Turn in the permission slip  by Tuesday, May 24th. 

Hinsdale Public Library
The Hinsdale Public Library met with grade levels this past week to share their summer reading program and activities.  These events are all free for Elm families, but some do require registration.  Registration for all summer library programming opens on Monday, May 23rd at 9:00 AM.  I highly encourage you to register early if your child is interested in any of the programs, classes or book clubs.  You can check out their offerings here. They will also be having a "Kickoff to Summer Reading" party on Wednesday, June 8 from 2-4 PM with outside activities including ice cream and face painting. So bring the entire family, have some fun and sign up for summer reading!

End of Year Pool Party:  Elm School PTO Is happy to announce that we are hosting an end of year Pool Party on Wednesday, 6/1/22 from 4-6:30 PM at Hinsdale Community Pool (500 W. Hinsdale Ave, Hinsdale). Pizza will be provided by the PTO and the concession stand will be open for purchases.
