Please submit these stories of success to Lydia Bates.
Purdue Horizons Students Travel to Spain

Submitted by:
Rosa Villarreal
Associate Dean of Students, Director of Horizons Student Support Services
Purdue University

Purdue University’s Horizons Student Support Services in Spain experience was the third opportunity offered to the program to expand global educational opportunities for traditionally underrepresented groups.

Prior to a generous grant provided to Horizons by the Office of the Provost, Horizons staff supported and encouraged students to study abroad; however, participation by Horizons students in study abroad opportunities was negatively affected due to cost, a general lack of information, and low confidence in their abilities to travel abroad.

It was obvious that there existed a need for outreach to this particular group of students and in recognizing this need, Horizons was granted another year of subsidized funding.
The Horizons in Spain experience provided a framework for Purdue in increasing the number of first-generation, low income college students who are more knowledgeable about and are participating in study abroad experiences. Horizons leads outreach efforts on Purdue’s campus to:
  • strengthen participants’ knowledge about the benefits of study abroad and the opportunities that exist
  • develop an awareness of study abroad scholarships that can subsidize their experience
  • increase confidence in first-generation college students in order to study abroad and do so successfully.

Lots of great things are happening at TRIO SSS Ivy Tech Community College-Central Indiana! This year the program boasts its largest graduating class ever. Another noteworthy happening is the program's Summer Institute event held this past August. Ivy Tech-Central Indiana would also like to welcome their newest team member, LaKeysha Locke. LaKeysha is a native Detroiter who has worked in K-12 and Higher Education for over 10 years in the state of Michigan. LaKeysha earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Administration and a Master of Science degree in Sport Management from Eastern Michigan University; she earned post graduate credits in Educational Leadership at Michigan State University. In her life beyond ensuring educational equity and excellence, LaKeysha enjoys sports, photography and much more! Welcome to TRIO, LaKeysha!
IUPUI Offers Expanded Pre-Professional Internship Experience for Seniors

Submitted by:
David Jones
Academic Coordinator, TRIO Upward Bound

For the past three summers, the Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) TRIO Upward Bound Program has offered a Pre-Professional Internship Program to its seniors.  This year, the program was expanded from 7 to 17 worksites and included opportunities at the National Institute for Fitness and Sport (NIFS); Indiana University Schools of Social Work, Law, Dentistry, Public and Environmental Affairs; and the City of Indianapolis.  The seniors competitively interviewed for positions at each location. In addition to working with the internship partners on various projects; the seniors participated in workshops on issues such as, Sexual Harassment, Discrimination, Career Search Technology, and Conflict Resolution in the Workplace--all while taking a college-level Communication class to develop the soft-skills necessary to thrive in today’s professional work environment.
At the conclusion of the Pre-Professional Internship Program, the seniors prepared an individualized presentation using applications such as PowerPoint and Prezi.  The presentations were presented to the Organizational Partners at a concluding reception.  As a result of this experience IUPUI seniors now have a resume, LinkedIn account, and real-world work experience. Already a great start to their professional futures!

WANTED: Newsletter Articles and Editorial Liaisons

The Editorial and Publications committee has established Editorial Liaisons across the state of Indiana. They are the "point person" for your respective districts. If you have any events, news, or success stories you wish to share with Indiana TRIO members, MAEOPP and other stakeholders, please submit your information to your respective Liaison for consideration. He/she will then forward articles from the district to the E-news editors, Jessica Montalvo and Juan "Buck" Jordan for inclusion in the next Indiana TRIO Newsletter.

In the state of Indiana, there are nine congressional districts. We currently have three vacant positions; districts one, two, and nine. If you reside in any of these districts and are interested in becoming and Editorial Liaison, lease contact Lydia Bates. As a liaison, you will be responsible for providing news articles and pictures from your program as well as, soliciting articles from your peers within your district. As the point person, this will give you a wonderful opportunity to network and develop relationships among your colleagues on other campuses.

So, if you are interested in being active on an Indiana TRIO committee, consider the Editorial Liaison position.
