USI TRIO Students Send Cards Overseas

Submitted by:
Aaron Pryor
Academic Counselor, TRIO Student Support Services
University of Southern Indiana

During the University of Southern Indiana’s fall semester, the participants of Student Support Services banded together to volunteer their time, energy, and resources for two amazing causes to help give back to the community. In collaboration with the Marketing and Research Department, our students filled out thoughtful, creative, and personalized holiday cards to our military members serving overseas to protect our essential freedoms (including a right to pursue education). The cards were intended to give joy and thanks to those who would not see their own families for the holidays so that we could have the ongoing safety and security to appreciate our own.

As the importance of the cards is easily seen, so too was it identified that there are military men and women here at home that need our help as well. A call for help was sent out to provide home essentials to formerly homeless individuals now residing in Permanent Support Housing at Lucas Place II (a program and property under the care of ECHO Housing in Evansville, Indiana). Although services exist to aid our veterans, they are times not even enough to fulfil basic needs of daily living. Our students responded by donating clothing, toiletries, paper products, cleaning supplies, and the like. One thoughtful student even took it upon herself to create baskets full of all of the above. Through our students’ education, personal growth, and identification of civil rights and responsibilities they have been able to make noticeable impacts in the lives of others. This is the true dream of many TRIO programs—to go beyond the mundane and become extraordinary.

ND TRIO Programs Give Back

As most students prepared to take a break from the books due to the holiday season, ND TRIO students on the other hand, were preparing to give. In collaboration with the South Bend Catholic Worker – Our Lady of the Road, a community organization that provides hospitality to individuals and families in need in the Michiana area, TRIO students donated their time and skills in the spirit of the season. Unfortunately, during the holiday season, some families are simply unable to enjoy warm meals, exchange gifts, and overload on bouts of laughter. As a result, in an effort to extend a dose of good cheer, TRIO students assisted with food preparation, packing donated clothing, and even provided gift wrapping to create a memorable and meaningful holiday for local families.  “I’m really blessed and sometimes, I take that for granted. Volunteering reminds me that homelessness and/or poverty can happen to anyone and it is our responsibility to take care of the community,” said Upward Bound senior, Estrella Velez. Even though the holiday season has run its course, ND Talent Search and Upward Bound students understand service is the only gift that keeps on giving.

IPFW TRIO students spent their fall break participating in experiential learning! Students traveled to Columbus, Ohio where they visited Kelton House and learned about the Underground Railroad. While in Mrs. Kelton's house, students got to travel back in time and learn about what life was like for two young girls on the underground railroad. After learning about the history of slavery, the abolitionist movement, and the underground railroad; students spent the afternoon at the Columbus Zoo. While at the zoo, students enjoyed behind-the-scenes experiences at the Manatee Rehabilitation Center and the Jack Hannah Veterinary Clinic. Students learned about careers at the zoo and what it takes to care for the zoo's many animals.
