Skills for Care research

Skills for Care have recently published a new set of reports and infographics that examine the state of the adult social care workforce both nationally and regionally.

In Herefordshire, the report found that although the average age for care workers is 43, over 25% of all the workforce is over 55. This means that approximately 1,500 people may retire in the next ten years at a time when demand for services is growing.

Although Herefordshire has an experienced ‘core’ of workers (around 69% of the workforce has been in the sector for at least three years), the turnover rate of employed staff in Herefordshire is higher than both the regional and national average (34.7%, compared with 29.4% and 27.3% respectively).

This data is important to all of us who work within the social care sector. The relatively high turnover rate and the age profile of care workers are of particular concern and highlight the importance of recruiting safely and effectively.

Hoople is running a Safer Recruitment Processes in Adult Social Care training programme on the morning of Thursday 26 January 2017. The session costs £55 + VAT per person and aims to build on current knowledge and skills to support a ‘value based approach’ to recruitment and selection. It enables the creation and maintenance of a workforce that embraces workplace values and feeds into the CQC KLOE of ‘Is the service safe, effective, caring well led and responsive’.

Help Hoople to help the homeless

Hoople Recruitment is working in partnership with Kemble Housing's Supported Housing for Young People Project (SHYPP) to provide help for the homeless this winter.

Between 10.30 am and 1.30 pm on Wednesday 7 December, Hoople Recruitment and SHYPP will together be collecting donations of the following items to support the homeless and make the coming months more bearable:
  • Sleeping bags and bedding (must be new for health and safety reasons)
  • Tents
  • Blankets
  • Torches
  • Rucksacks
  • Clothing and shoes (no underwear please)
  • Coats, hats, scarves and gloves
  • Toiletries: shower gel, shampoo, tooth brushes/toothpaste, deodorant, hairbrushes or combs, razors and shaving foam, sanitary towels/tampons, flannels or sponges and baby/face wipes
  • Tinned food (preferably ring pull and soft drinks (canned or bottled)
  • Pocket diaries
The items should be dropped off at the Hoople Recruitment office at 57-59 Blueschool Street, Hereford, HR1 2AR.

Bonnie Evans, Recruitment Consultant at Hoople Recruitment and organiser of the event, says: “It’s incredibly difficult at any time of the year to be homeless but even more so in winter when the nights get colder and longer and Christmas is on the horizon. We are happy to help SHYPP and send our heartfelt thanks, in advance, to all those who are willing to support us by making their donations on the 7th.”
