Updates from UIS Web Services

January 2022

A cache is the topmost level of your browser’s memory, where all of your most-used information is stored for fast and easy access. Think the info you write on a Post-it and stick to your computer versus info you put in a Google Doc and can’t find later.

This newsletter aims to be your web-editing cache. Only the information you need to know; easy access. No deep-dive (or dictionary) is required.

We have said congratulations and goodbye to Danielle Held, Senior Web Project Manager, and Rob Pongsajapan, Product Manager. While we are sad to see them leave, we wish both Danielle and Rob the very best in their new positions elsewhere at Georgetown.

We are saying hello and welcome to our new Senior Web Project Manager, Tara Glover! Tara is a seasoned project management professional with expertise across a wide range of industries including the federal government, SaaS, tech, and growth stage startups. She is passionate about creating structure where it is lacking, questioning the status quo, and helping people connect to cross collaborate. She is also a mom to 5 amazing kids, a lover of strong coffee, and a continuously learning chicken and duck raising homesteader.

WordPress tips and tricks: Editing the menu

Abby is a project manager on the Web Services team. In this column, she’ll share tips about how to get the most out of the GU WordPress platform and improve your website. You can email her at with topic ideas you’d like to see covered here!

Based on our Annual Customer Satisfaction survey responses, one of the most common challenges for website editors is editing the menu.

You can follow our step-by-step instructions for editing the main navigation menu, which controls the page links that appear in a number of different navigational locations.

The main navigation menu should contain the most important pages on your site and should be organized in a way that is logical for your website’s users.

Navigating to the menu editor

All editors have the ability to edit their menu by logging in and navigating to Appearance > Menus from the WordPress dashboard.

Add a menu item

To add a menu item, select the page(s) or post(s) you wish to add, and click “Add to Menu.'' This will add the page(s) or post(s) to the bottom of your menu.

Organizing a menu item

To organize your menu, click and drag a menu item to your desired location. Clicking and dragging the menu item to the right will designate the item as part of the sub-menu.

This can also be done by clicking the arrow to the right of the Menu item. This will open a drop-down menu with options to “Move” the item.

Customizing the menu item text

You can customize the menu item text, by locating the “Navigation Label” in the drop-down menu and editing the existing text. Note: This will not change the Title of the page/post. It will only change the label of the page/post in the menu.
