When I Was “For,” Then, “Against” Showed Up

Whenever you truly and wholeheartedly take a stand for truth and the ways of Christ, giving your full surrender to His word, at this point is when Against will always show up. Many will begin talking to you with care in their voice, understanding your need. Many will be kind and gently seek to help you, while trying to convince you to be less stringent. They seek to win you over so that you will need them or follow them; or they simply justify their own weak lives and feeble faith by moving you to agree with them. When you do not fall prey to such flattery, and refuse to concede or compromise, then you will see their true spirit and real intent—Against. Your resolve was tested, and you did not crumble through enticements. Now, the next phase of Against surfaces; open hostility and rejection, authoritative assertion, and false accusations and stories to lead others to think ill of you, that is, bearing false witness.

Coming to know the truth in Christ is a marvelous thing, residing in truth sets you free. Once you know the truth, then, you must embrace it with your whole heart and mind; your thoughts must give way to truth and you fully surrender to the truth. Many encounter truth and some proceed to embrace truth, but that is still not enough. Truth must be your sovereign in all things and in every area of your life.

You first learn truth and then, you obey truth; your life becomes truthful, even in the inner most parts of your being where the intents and imaginations spring forth. Here, you align with truth in all ways, every way, all-the-time. Truth wins! But even more so, you come to a place where you love the truth and want it applied to every aspect of your life; you cannot imagine your life without truth and will not sell the truth for anything or anyone. You love the truth.

Here, I have witnessed many Christians say, “Amen.” However, their daily life’s decisions prove that the amen was shallow and most superficial. They welcome the truth and it is accepted only as long as it aligns with their true desires; the truth receives a welcome when it is in agreement with what they thought was good, right, and just. They receive the truth when it complies with their needs, wants, and thoughts; however, the Holy Spirit of truth is far from their daily walk as they trust in their own ways, words, and wisdom, yet put the name of the Lord on it. This is evil. This is the flesh nature trying to be spiritual. Many are on this path, today.

Truth has many enemies, yet all these foes can be found under the heading of unbelief where the subcategories of delusion, deception, disobedience, decadence, and defiance. All of these will have a common thread—highminded, the person who is wise in his own eyes. The Bible says that there is more hope for a fool than for the person who is wise in his own eyes (Prov. 26:12).

When you come to know the truth and love truth, then you have come to the posture that abides in Christ. As Christ said, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:31–33). Everyone loves to quote, “And the truth shall set you free,” but most leave out the part that requires you to abide in His word and becoming a disciple of Christ. They want the freedom part but leave out the responsibility portion. I have encountered this issue numerous times, as Christians have sought freedom, yet refuse to let truth have its way in their lives. They prefer their gluttony, their wayward, unbelieving family members, their prideful positions of self, their lusts, their depression and despondency. They want to be pampered and appreciated. These Christians love to sing, pray, and post Christian values, while they refuse to embrace and live out the very words of Christ that will make them a devoted follower of Christ and walk fully in truth. They only want enough Jesus to go to heaven; they want to be seen and known as a Christian by the people. Therefore, they keep fellowship with the wayward.

When Christians wholeheartedly believe the words of Christ and no longer give themselves to compromise and concessions with those who are lukewarm in their faith, then you will see the enemies of the cross surface and bite like a rabid dog, or they will flee from your presence crying foul. Christians who refuse to embrace truth in the inward parts love to hold onto doctrinal statements to assert themselves, but they do not surrender. These Christians resists truth because it confronts the evil in their heart; they begin to argue and find fault because they will not surrender, but they will demand your submission to them. They will not follow truth but will massage the truth to fit their prideful spirit. Pride always demands from others what it refuses to give.

Today, the self-life is lurking in the church and it presents itself as spiritual; it talks truth and uses scriptural quips and quotes, phrases and prose, but they are not rooted in truth. These faulty Christians remain hidden and in the shadows of the truth, not fully in the light; they are in that place where fungus grows and mold increases. They remain in these darkened places until confronted by the believer who truly stands for truth, walks in the light of Christ, speaks the truth, abides in the word of Christ, and makes decisions that are found in true freedom—those who no longer give place to the grey, the lukewarm, the half-hearted and the double-minded. When this happens, then you will see the bite of the unbelieving dog that prefers his own vomit (Prov. 26:11). The apostle Peter warned the church referencing this very verse (2 Pet. 2:22). Peter said, “For when they speak great swelling words of emptiness, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through lewdness, the ones who have actually escaped from those who live in error. While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a person is overcome, by him also he is brought into bondage. For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning. For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them” (2 Pet. 2:18–21).

Over the past thirty years of ministry, I have witnessed many come to freedom as truth confronted them and true freedom was only found when they fully surrendered in the deep inward parts of their being and surrendered to the light, love, and life in Christ, so that every decision, desire, and doubt was swallowed up in truth. In every single case, when they stood For The Truth and gained their freedom, then, Against always showed up. My own life testifies to this truth: When I was For, Then, Against showed up! Whenever you hold onto the light, giving no partiality to dark, then dark will hold a meeting with those who love the dark and speak evil of light. My response: “What is that to me?” Light does not ask dark for permission nor does truth request permission from the lie. They do not mix.

Many in church come to you for help and answers; they confess their struggle or weakness and ask for your help, prayers, and perhaps to mentor them unto victory and freedom. You agree and begin to ask them pointed questions, knowing they need to face the fear, weakness, lust, struggle, issue, or offense. Then, you find them giving you half-answers, excuses, or various explanations to wiggle out from any fault. They ask for your patience; they shed many tears, and they always need prayer, but they never take a step of obedience unto victory; they fail to confess but keep concealing the matter with excuses and explanations; hence, they never prosper rightly in the Lord (Prov. 28:13). Soon, your inquiries of concern for them turn to raising their ire toward you and they find faults here and there. Then, you become the problem for them; you are now deemed unforgiving, harsh, intolerant, and a legalist who does not love. You did not yield to their whining and you did not give place to their pining ways; you stood for truth, humility, and the love that is demonstrated in Scripture; then you found that they are now against you—Against showed up and you became the enemy. Why? Because they were enemies of the cross with evil hearts of unbelief. As Proverbs records: “An unjust man is an abomination to the righteous, and he who is upright in the way is an abomination to the wicked” (Prov. 29:27). Pride always causes a problem and then proceeds to make it your fault.

There will always be those who entertain the truth but never embrace the truth. There will always be those who acknowledge and agree with the truth, but they continue to resist truth, preferring the lie that pleases self’s delusion. They never apply the truth to their affections and never come to adore truth and live in the truth—the place that moves you to take a stand with full resolve. Therefore, they resist the truth, refuse its place in their lives, and reject all those who live the truth. They only align with those who acknowledge and agree with truth but reject all who apply the truth and become lovers of the truth. The song, “O come let us adore Him” is merely a song that moves their emotions, but they do not adore Him as truth nor the Holy Spirit of Truth.

Throughout the past thirty years, I have been treated this way over and over again by those who speak truth but will not let truth be the sovereign in their lives; their personal affections and appetites rule them. Their pride secures them in their own insecurities so that they reject exposure of inferiorities and inadequacies. They loved you only as long as they received attention and acceptance from you.

I have witnessed people come into full freedom; they overcame bondage or some weakness by surrendering to the truth. They humbled themselves before God and walked in the light, confessing freely of their new life. Yet, when they stood For the truth and refused to surrender the truth to please the defiant, the decadent, or the disobedient, then they were treated with contempt by the very ones who once said, “Love you.” This is self at work in the church today; they do not love Christ, but they want to be loved, followed; they walk in envy—The place where every other evil thing is present (James 3:16). They do not want truth but their own version of the truth.

I watched Christians overcome shyness, timidity, inadequacy, and inferiority; who stood for all that was right in Christ and humbled themselves. Then, those who once loved them, turned on them with disdain. Parents, friends, or relatives wanted to be revered, appreciated, credited, or followed, therefore, they despise the freedom gained. Whenever you see someone stand “FOR,” then you must also know that this is the precise time when “AGAINST” surfaces. This is the battle of faith, and those who said they loved you will be the very ones to despise you, because their love was a self-love. I watched grandparents walk out on their own children and grandchildren because their pride of self was greater than their love for truth. They preferred their own insecurities. I watched older women hug and love little kids in church, only to walk out on them and not give one word to anyone, discarding the relationship as though it never existed, yet tell others that they loved those kids. Hypocrisy!

I have witnessed people confess weakness and want freedom from it, and then they yielded to that very weakness but excused it by saying that the pastor did not love them. They openly confess pride and pray for humility, then escape any conviction or accountability; they stay in that pride and tell others that they were mistreated. I have been held at fault for so many issues that I cannot remember them all; oh my, there are so many stories. However, all of them are rooted in simple unbelief. Such miserable lives looking to advance their misery into you. They seek to gain your friendship and move you to follow them; they want your support in order to validate and justify their prideful posture.

However, I write this to you today and use these little stories and examples, so you will know and expect adversity surfaces when resolve to know and live the truth takes place in your life. When you take your stand FOR, then know that AGAINST will show-up. Joshua called for the people of God to make a decision and stick with that decision when he said, “Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve” (Josh. 24:15). Joshua was not calling everyone to get-along with everyone, but to come into alignment with the Lord with all loyalty and to serve Him. The call to submission was to obey the voice of the Lord—To choose life and the love of the Lord (Deut. 30:20). Just because someone is your spouse, parent, friend, or child, does not mean they will love you or the life in Christ. Ruth left all; Rahab left all; Jeremiah’s own family worked against him; David was hated. The enemies of the faith will be in your own household and often times they will be the ones who claim to be people of faith. The Pharisees read, studied and taught the Scriptures, but used them to satisfy their own ends and refused to yield to the Christ. The apostles suffered the same fate and were despised by those who had the Scriptures in their possession; this has not changed.

Remember, the fight will come to you when you stand for truth, speak forthrightly, step in faith, and align with the humility of Christ, thus giving no regard to the proud nor turning aside to any lie. As David wrote, “Blessed is that man who makes the LORD his trust, and does not respect the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies” (Psalm 40:4).

Christ Jesus did not please everyone; the fight came to Him; He simply always sought to please the Father. Be prepared, but do not yield through compromise or concessions. I urge you today: “Buy the Truth and do not sell it” (Prov. 23:23). Amen!

I encourage you to print this out and read it with others in the family of faith.
