MANITOBA GOLF SCHOLARSHIP FUND ANNOUNCES 2015 RECIPIENTS
 
The Board of Directors of the Manitoba Golf Scholarship Fund Inc. are proud to announce the recipients of this year’s scholarships.  These outstanding individuals have participated in the Manitoba golf community, demonstrated academic excellence and are pursuing their post-secondary studies at Canadian educational institutions.  Since inception, 168 Scholarships have been awarded totaling $173 500.  A total of three scholarships will be awarded this year.
 
In 2013, the Dr. Dwight Parkinson Award was created which is a $3500 scholarship that has been made possible by Mr. Dave Hill of the St Charles Country Club.   This award recognizes Dr. Dwight Parkinson’s long time commitment to the game of golf.  It is awarded to the student entering their first year of studies at a post-secondary institution with the highest academic standing.  This year’s recipient is Josh Martineau of the Pine Ridge Golf Club.  Josh is entering the University of Winnipeg and is pursuing a Bachelor of Kinesiology and Applied Health degree with future plans to pursue a degree in Physical Therapy.  In 2014 he finished 2nd at a Maple Leaf Junior Tour event and finished top four in his age group for scoring average during the season.
 
The following two individuals will receive $1500 scholarships from the Manitoba Golf Scholarship Fund:
 
David Nelson of the Southwood Golf & Country Club is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology at the University of Manitoba and plans to pursue a career in Medicine.  He finished 1st at the 2014 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship Qualifier and competed in the National Championship at Elmhurst and Southwood. 
 
Steven Young of the St Charles Country Club is working towards a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Chemistry and Physics.  Following completion of his Bachelor of Science, Steven plans on entering the Faculty of Medicine.  In 2014, he finished tied for 11th at the CN Future Links event at the Shilo Country Club and was second at a Maple Leaf Junior Tour event.  He has been a member of the University of Manitoba Bison’s Golf Team since the fall of 2014.

MANITOBA GOLF HALL OF FAME ANNOUNCES 2015 INDUCTEES

The Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame & Museum Inc. will hold its thirteenth annual induction ceremony, presented by the McPhillips Station Casino, Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries, on Monday, September 28th, 2015 at the McPhillips Station Casino.
 
The late Isabel Beairsto will be inducted as an Honoured Member in the Athlete category.  The late Harold “Hal” Eidsvig and Leonard Harvey will be inducted in the Athlete and Builder categories. Barrie McWha will be inducted in the Builder category.
 
“Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries is delighted, to once again, host the Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony,” said Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries CEO, John Stinson. “This year’s inductees have made extraordinary contributions to the game of golf in our province, and they have each proven their dedication and merit for this distinct recognition. Congratulations to each of the inductees and their families.”
 
“In this, the 100th year of Golf Manitoba, we are pleased to be able to recognize the outstanding accomplishments and contributions to the game over many decades by this year’s Honoured Members. Their inclusion in the Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame is very deserving recognition of all that they have done to advance the game of golf in the province.”, said Don MacDonald, President of the Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame and Museum Inc.
 
The Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame & Museum Inc. was formed to acknowledge the contributions and accomplishments made by Manitobans as competitors, both amateur and professional, builders and course superintendents to the game of golf.  It is a tripartite organization, the partners being Golf Manitoba, Manitoba Golf Superintendents' Association and the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) of Manitoba.
 
In addition to the annual inductions, future plans include enhancing the ability of the public to access information about members of the Golf Hall of Fame and Manitoba's rich golfing history as well as to assist golf clubs in preserving their heritage.
 
Individual members and member clubs wishing to nominate an individual (amateur or professional golfers, superintendents, builders, media, etc.) for the Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame may obtain nomination forms through any of the three member organizations or from the following website: www.manitobagolfhalloffame.com

 
100th ANNIVERSARY GOLF TOURNAMENT PRESENTED BY 
 
The 100th Anniversary Golf Tournament Presented by MNP took place Monday August 17th at the beautiful St Charles Country Club.  Participants played 18 holes of golf which included one hole with hickory golf clubs typical to what would have been used in the late 1800’s.

Following the golf, a celebratory dinner took place which was highlighted by keynote speaker Mr George Macgregor, the current Captain of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews Scotland.

BUD FOSTER OF WINNIPEG WINS THE 100th ANNIVERSARY RAFFLE GRAND PRIZE

Bud Foster of Winnipeg is the lucky winner of the 100th Anniversary Raffle Grand Prize which was drawn on Friday August 14th by The Exchange Group Chartered Accountants. 
 
Bud is the recipient of a tee time (four players) and the use of two power carts at the 40 participating golf clubs.  The golf package is valued at just over $10 000.

MAPLEWOOD’S TAMMY GIBSON WINS HER FOURTH SENIOR WOMEN’S TITLE

Tammy Gibson won her fourth Senior Women’s title at the Niakwa Country Club with a three day total of 240 (76, 78 & 86) which was five shots better than the 2013 & 2014 Champion Rhonda Orr of Southwood.  Gibson’s previous Provincial Senior Championships came in 2009, 2011 & 2012. 
 
Gibson and Orr will be joined by Barb Lafleche of Teulon and compete as Team Manitoba at the Canadian Women’s Senior Championship August 26th to 28th at the Sawmill Creek Golf Resort & Spa in Camlachie, ON.

MANITOBA GOLF HALL OF FAME HONORED MEMBER GARTH COLLINGS ADDS ANOTHER PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP TO IMPRESSIVE RESUME

Inducted into the Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame in 2008, Garth Collings continues to build on an already impressive resume.  Collings won his second Senior Men’s Championship (first came in 2013) at the Niakwa Country Club by shooting a three day total of 224 (74, 74 & 76) which was four shots better than Mike Berney of Transcona and Ken Warwick of Niakwa who tied for the runner up spot.
 
Collings, Berney and Warwick will compete together in the Interprovincial Team Championships at the Canadian Men’s Senior Championship as Team Manitoba September 1st to 4th at the Desert Blume Golf Club in Medicine Hat, Alberta.

PINE RIDGE GOLF CLUB TO HOST WOMEN'S ALTERNATE SHOT BENEFITTING GOLF FORE THE CURE

In 2007, Golf Manitoba added the Golf For the Cure component to the Women’s Alternate Shot Championship.  Our goal is to make the event fun, create continued awareness of the initiative and raise funds for breast cancer research.  In 2014, $3500 was raised and this year will see the event be expanded with hopes of exceeding $5000 for the cause.

This year’s Alternate Shot benefitting Golf For the Cure will be held Wednesday September 9th at the Pine Ridge Golf Club.  To register, please click here.
