School will reopen if required
Omarama school remains closed this week. However, it will reopen if there is a need, principal Kim McKenzie, says.
Mrs McKenzie said all pupils were able to learn from home.
"It is working well.  We've had a lot of positive feedback, but it is different."
The pupils had been learning to use new technologies effectively and there was ongoing learning outside the classroom, as well as covering social and mindfulness topics.
The decision about opening the school for the rest of level 3 would be made depending on the community's needs, she said.
"It has been new learning for us [the teaching staff] as well, it's been really good. "
Becoming "more IT savvy" had always been part of a long-term goal.
"Now, people have to be."
And teachers, parents and pupils had all "risen to the challenge".
"Everyone is coping well and looking after one an another in this unusual time.
"It's been great reading children's diaries in the Daily Wire ...those will be the memories we have."
Once the school did open, there were certain procedures it was important that parents and visitors adhered to, she said. [See poster below - Let's keep everyone safe]

Further information on schooling during alert level 3 for early childhood and schooling services (for years 1-10) is being released regularly on the Ministry of Education website.

Drive to bring visitors back to Waitaki begins

Tourism Waitaki, together with the Waitaki District Council, has launched a low-cost tourism campaign which calls on residents to use their personal influence to encourage domestic visitors to return  in spring and summer, once Covid-alert levels return to 1.
Tourism Waitaki shared the campaign with the council and tourism groups today.
“We have produced a range of free digital assets to be distributed throughout the district to families, businesses, even local community associations to add their personal touch using individual images that are special to them,” general manager Margaret Munro said.
“This can include business images and logos, and we want them shared around New Zealand to their family, friends or customer connections.”
Ms Munro said it would be friends and family who would be the first to return to the region.
“We know from estimated spend data in the Waitaki District that the domestic spend (68%) far outweighed that of international (32%), so this campaign is aimed at bringing those domestic visitors back."
Tourism Waitaki, like many in the tourism industry, had found itself with a challenging future ahead and fully understood the impact on the sector, she said.
It had lost 80% of its operational revenue, historically drawn from operating its own tourism attractions and was now left with no customers for an unknown length of time.
“The future poses a complex challenge for our organisation,” Ms Munro said.
“We have been assessing the focus and needs of the business, ranging from supporting the tourism businesses in the district who are also facing issues, and ensuring attractions such as the Penguin Colony are in a position to restart when visitors return.”
Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher said with New Zealanders making up about ¾ of the visitor market pre-Covid-19 there was a strong base on which to grow domestic tourism.
"Many of these Kiwis coming to Waitaki are friends and families of locals, so getting our locals to be even more vocal about the wonderful attributes of our district makes good sense.
“This campaign I am sure will stimulate the regeneration of visitors to the Waitaki, once it’s safe to travel,” he said.
“We anticipate there will be a flow of regional and national visitors but we don’t know when that might start, and that makes it very difficult for many of our small and medium businesses to plan for their futures.
“We accept the return of any international visitors will be well in the future," he said.
The campaign titled “We are missing you” will be rolled out in three stages, with the first commencing this week. The messages will be changed with each stage.
At level 2 it will be; 'Lets reconnect here' and feature tourism hot spots, and at level 1, when travel will be easier, the campaign will switch to, 'Giving you our best deals'.

FENZ Omarama are now recruiting to fill various positions within the brigade and hope to have people ready to join by the time we step out of Covid-19 alert level 3.

We’ve got a great team of people, but the reality is that we are short of medical first responders and front line firefighters.

While the brigade has enough members to respond to whatever comes our way, the eight current firefighters and seven first responders are relied on to down tools and answer the call day or night. With initial training taking six to nine months, getting new recruits in the pipeline is a priority and if you’ve ever thought about joining, now is the time to take that next step. Getting back up to capacity will allow us to spread the load and ensure we are set for the next few years to come.

There will be a show-and-tell evening once we reach alert level 2 and, for anyone who is considering joining, it will be an opportunity to come along and check out some of what we do.
From there, applicants go through a brief process before starting a structured training programme that prepares them for a recruit course in 6-9 months. The benefit of having a group start together is that we will be able to deliver a specific training plan and you’ll have each other to learn off.

You don’t need to be super human to join, just bring your whole self and a desire to give something back to this awesome little community we call home. Even if you live a little distance from town, we have roles to suit. When you become a volunteer with us, your family becomes part of our whānau and we’re looking forward to welcoming you in.

Further advice for living at alert level 3 

Check for all information and daily updates

  • Anyone who is concerned about paying a power bill should get in contact with their power company.
  • Prepared food and drink can be bought and sold at service stations, but cannot be consumed by customers onsite. Many service stations across the country also have port-a-loos available for public use.
  • Visiting the dentist or optometrist for an annual check-up or for non-urgent care? Check-ups or non-urgent care are not available at Alert Level 3. However, emergency dental and optometry care services remain available at all levels. Contact your dentist or optometrist directly to find out how they can support you. 
  • Non essential house repairs, installing curtains and the like. Tradespeople can come to your home to do any installation or repair work at Alert Levels 1, 2 and 3. You and your tradespeople need to ensure the public health measures at each alert level are met. This includes the physical distancing requirements at Alert Levels 2 and 3. For more information, visit
  • Activities in or on the water. You can swim, surf, kayak, canoe, snorkel, row, windsurf and paddle-board. Single waka ama is also possible. You must stay in your bubble. Do not share equipment with those outside of your bubble (even with physical distancing) and only go out when conditions are calm and it is safe. Stay close to shore.
Friday 'fakeaways' the next big thing?

Four weeks in lockdown proved no obstacle for Chief and Chiefette [aka Chief fire officer Greg and wife Adrienne]. It seems like there was nothing they could not turn their hands to. At Easter it was camping at home away from home in a bubble. Last week, it was Friday night 'fakeaways'.
Rumour has it their plan to open a new outlet had a hose-full of cold water poured on it when they discovered their chosen name and slogan -  "Only CC's ees tasting like theeshad been trademarked and they were unwilling to face an expensive court-case. Julie and Bruce were heard to breathe an audible sigh of relief - "Phew," they said.

Essential services operating in Omarama

People are advised to put on disposable gloves before moving bins and to wash hands thoroughly afterwards. The handles can be a coronavirus hot-spot and must be treated like any other surface, doorknobs, stair rails etc, collectors say.

Omarama open: Wednesday and Sunday – 9am to 11am
Otematata open: Wednesday and Sunday – 1pm to 3pm
Charges will resume at these facilities from 1 May, with payment by Eftpos only (contactless if possible) to avoid cash-handling risks.  ​
We strongly encourage residents not to stockpile rubbish on their property due to health risks, and to use one of the services available.​

Household rubbish: Only bags of household/domestic waste and essential commercial waste will be accepted. There will be no charge for bags, however, there is a limit of two bags per car, per week (car registrations are recorded to monitor this).
Commercial rubbish: commercial waste from current account holders will be accepted with no gate charge, and invoiced later.
To safely manage these facilities under current circumstances and to protect the facility operators’ wellbeing, please note the following conditions for use.
• Now accepting greenwaste
• No recycling (either clean and store at home, or dispose of as rubbish)
• Place all waste in the marked area
• One person out of a car at any one time only
• Please do not talk to the booth operator
• Please leave promptly

Please do not enter a recovery park  if you are unwell or have been in close contact with someone with a confirmed or suspected case of Covid-19. Thank you!

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you are unwell or need advice about your health. Although Dr Tim and Annie are currently doing more telephone or virtual consults, we are still seeing patients who need to be seen at the clinic.

Do you have a cough, runny nose or sore throat?
If you have any or all of these symptoms, we can arrange to swab you for Covid-19 at zero cost to all enrolled and casual patients. Just call us on the numbers below to book in with the nurse or if you require further information.

Repeat prescriptions?
If you require a repeat prescription and hold a Community Services Card it is cheaper for you to book in with the Doctor for an appointment rather than ordering a prescription by phone. All prescriptions must now be emailed to the pharmacy and not taken in by hand.

Flu Notice
Flu shots are now available to anyone regardless of eligibility or not. We now have plenty in stock and urge all patients to get their flu shot if they have not already done so. With Covid-19 on our doorstep it is particularly important to protect yourselves and our community.
It is especially important, and free for pregnant women, anyone over the age of 65 and adults and children with certain chronic conditions who may develop complications from the flu. If you do not have an eligible condition, you can still benefit from the flu shot which is available at a nominal fee.

In order to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and to protect our vulnerable at-risk patients we have been asked by the College of General Practitioners to only see patients at our clinics if they really need to be seen.
For all other appointments, we will now do these via telephone OR virtual Consultations (for this you will need a computer, laptop or smart phone so we can send you a link to download). All screening appointments i.e. Health Heart Checks, Diabetic checks, Cervical Smears etc. will be re-scheduled for a later date.

Waitaki District Council update

Council services at  Covid-19 alert level 3
in effect from Tuesday, April 28, 2020

Building services:
alert level 3 will be a return to semi-normal operations, including site inspections, albeit with strict distancing and health and safety rules in place.
Rubbish and Recycling: The council’s rural recovery parks and Palmerston Landfill will continue on reduced hours throughout level 3. From May 1 normal rubbish and greenwaste services will resume, including disposal charges. Payment will be by Eftpos only, and contactless payment is preferred. Recycling will not be accepted until the Waitaki Resource Recovery Park reopens.
Planning: The team are continuing to process resource consents and certificates remotely with priority given to those relating to essential services. Under level 3 it is possible to carry out physical site visits where needed, provided safety precautions are taken. The Government expects that any work that applicants are required to do, to address immediate health or life safety risks, or prevent serious environmental harm, must continue to be carried out. This includes the maintenance of control devices on mining, forestry sites, and urban and rural earthworks.
Parks and reserves: On April 28, Downer staff resume work. When you are out using our public spaces please respect the ‘bubbles’ they have and do not approach them to have a chat. If you do see anything that needs attention, please contact council on 03 433 0300 or report it through the Snap Send Solve App (find it on our website). We are working on bringing our green spaces back to the standards expected, but this will not happen overnight. We are expecting that the entire district will have its first mowing cut within 7-8 working days. These initial cuts likely won’t bring the reserves all the way back to standards expected, but this approach is being undertaken to ensure that there’s no damage to turf.
Council meetings:  The council meeting at 9am, Tuesday May 12 and the additional council meeting at 9am on Tuesday May 26 will be held online via Zoom meeting and live-streamed to the public.

The directory is part of the Covid-19 Waitaki Response page which also includes information on council services and facilities, support for people and businesses.
At present, the list includes medical centres and  pharmacies, vets, food and service providers, service stations and transport options.
Council economic development manager Gerard Quinn said it was still working with local businesses to fill this list and encouraged everyone who wanted to be included to get in touch and register by emailing The council needs to know your location, contact details and a website link so people can check for any specific conditions.
Business owners are reminded that it is the business’s responsibility to ensure they are acting according to the law while staying open. If businesses are uncertain about whether or not they can continue to operate they are urged to contact MBIE by emailing or calling 0800 22 66 57 (9 am to 5 pm).

- Police message to people facing family harm

The police are urging anyone with concerns or information about family harm in their community to get in touch as soon as they can.
“We want everybody to know police will continue to prioritise family harm incidents and we will come when you call," assistant commissioner Sandra Venables said.
“We realise this is a hard time for some families and we want them to know police are there for them.
"We know that for some people, home right now may be an uncomfortable or scary place. 
“It may also be harder for some people to contact police or other agencies as they may not have easy access to a phone.  
“Let me be clear, if you are in immediate danger and you cannot call us on 111, leave your house and get out of harm’s way. Your safety comes first. Get to a safe distance and then ask a neighbour, or a passer-by (at a two metre distance) to call 111 for you.   
“We also urge neighbours and friends to contact police if they have concerns. If you think something’s not right, it probably isn’t. 
“It’s okay to call Police if you’re worried about someone as they may not be able to speak up for themselves. It’s everybody’s responsibility to help keep each other safe right now through this challenging time. You could be saving a life. 
“We know there are also people out there who don’t want to harm their loved ones but who are facing an internal struggle. To them I say: please stay strong, please walk away and take a moment so you don’t do something you’ll regret to someone you love.  
“You can reach out to us, or you can contact one of many support services listed on the Covid-19 website. They are there to support every member of your family and whānau.”   
The police have worked closely with Ministry of Social Development to ensure there is temporary accommodation for people under Police Safety Orders.
And police, the Joint Venture Business Unit, and MSD have also worked together to ensure 0800 Hey Bro (a number for men who feel they’re going to harm a loved one) has been able to operate nationally during COVID-19.  
“We know being around the same people 24/7 can be a challenge, and we know for some people this may make them fearful, at risk, or on the edge of doing harm. So if you feel fearful or threatened, please reach out."

Otago Rural Support Trust: 0800 787 254 (0800 RURAL HELP) continues to provide its support service over the phone or on Skype/Zoom during lockdown.
They can help connect farming families with business advice, suppliers, financial information, health, and counselling services. Their services are free and confidential.
Guidance is going out to farmers about managing under meatworks’ capacity restrictions.
