Greetings from STELAR,

March is Women's History Month, a time to reflect on women's many contributions to science, and the ITEST program's efforts to increase the number of girls who pursue STEM careers. Our Monthly Highlight features resources to support broadening the participation of women in STEM.

Inclusiveness is a core value of the National Science Foundation. This month's featured STELAR resource is an archive of an informative NSF webinar hosted by STELAR, showcasing the many NSF programs centered on broadening participation.

Our project spotlight is a key example of the types of culturally-competent projects that are funded through ITEST. Dr. Kathy Bertram's PREPARES project engages with two groups of indigenous middle school students in measuring climate change in Alaska and Hawaii.

We would also like to invite ITEST projects to join STELAR as we organize a joint session presentation for the annual conference of the Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS). The submission deadline is April 3, so email us today if interested!

In other conference news, we are thrilled to announce that two ITEST symposia sessions have been accepted for presentation this spring! STELAR and NSF ITEST project teams will be at both AERA and NARST, complete details are available in our news item Upcoming ITEST Symposia in 2017.

Finally, remember to keep saving the date for the 2017 STELAR ITEST PI & Evaluator Summit on June 15-16. Invitations will be sent to PIs in early April.

Happy Spring!

The STELAR Team

Monthly Highlight:

Broadening the Participation of Women in STEM

March is Women's History Month, an excellent time to reflect on women's contributions to the sciences, and to examine the ongoing work of ITEST projects to increase the participation of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

For this month's highlight we feature a collection of the events, publications, instruments and materials developed by ITEST projects and the STELAR Center as they engage with and inspire girls to pursue STEM education and career opportunities.

STELAR Webinar on NSF Opportunities: Broadening Participation in STEM

Last summer STELAR hosted a special webinar on behalf of the National Science Foundation Directorate for Education and Human Resources (EHR), highlighting programs and funding opportunities within EHR especially aimed at broadening participation in STEM.

ITEST Project Spotlight:

Preparing Responsive Educators using Place-Based Authentic Research in Earth Systems (PREPARES)

STELAR had the opportunity to catch up with Dr. Kathy Bertram of Alaska Pacific University, Principal Investigator of the PREPARES project. PREPARES works with indigenous middle school students, engaging them in learning about place-based, culturally responsive climate changes.

"PREPARES is bridging the gap for students between instrument-based science and traditional ecological knowledge... while sharing climate changes from two distinctly different places (Alaska and Hawaii) through the lenses of their two distinctly different indigenous cultures."

Upcoming ITEST Symposia in 2017

Each year, STELAR collaborates with ITEST project teams to submit session proposals to education and research conferences around the country. These sessions broaden awareness about the program and share the program's findings with others in the STEM education and research communities.

We are thrilled to announce these two ITEST symposia sessions that have been accepted for presentation during Spring 2017:

NARST 2017 in San Antonio: "Using locally relevant authentic inquiries to engage youth in environmental science topics out-of-school"

AERA 2017 in San Antonio: “Leveraging Technology-Based Learning Environments for Positive Outcomes among Underrepresented Minority Groups in STEM Education”

For details about these presentations, view the news item on the STELAR website.

STELAR Webinar

Digital Badging in ITEST Projects

March 28, 3-4 pm ET

Digital badges are an exciting way to motivate and engage participants, accurately measure progress, and channel enthusiasm for learning new technologies. Especially useful for out-of-school programs, badges are an innovative way to deliver curriculum modules, for both instructors and students!

During this webinar we will hear from two ITEST projects as they explain their digital badging processes, and how they plan to employ badges in their project work.

Space is limited, register today!
