Dear Parents and Care Givers,

Last Friday the staff enjoyed a training and development “Student Free” day. The purpose of these days is to enable the teaching staff to undertake some professional learning and to work together to develop curriculum that will engage students in their learning and promote improved outcomes for all students.
For the teaching staff it was a day to focus on our quality teaching agenda. It seems common sense that the quality of the teaching that occurs in classes is the single biggest factor in improved student outcomes but as a society we have for some time been preoccupied by the size of classes and the content of the curriculum rather than how this learning can be structured and delivered in a way that ‘hooks’ students attention. John Dewey almost 100 years ago said;
“We can have compulsory physical attendance at school; but education comes only though willing attention to and participation in school activities. It follows that the teacher must select these activities with reference to the child’s interests, powers, and capabilities.”
This has never been truer than with the current generation of young people who have many different media competing for their attention.
We discussed how we can increase the learner resilience of our students by increasing academic stretch within the curriculum for all students and by seeing the struggle involved in learning as something to celebrate rather than see it as something to avoid. We also discussed the difference between compliant students and engaged learners and teachers were asked to consider throughout the day, as they worked on curriculum and assessment design, how they can improve the quality of the classroom practice to enthuse and connect with those compliant students so that they become engaged, passionate learners.
The phase 1 Australian Curriculum areas (English, HASS, Maths & Science) spent the day working with our Quality Teaching Coordinator, Zara Anderson, to focus on strategies to engage students and increase their critical thinking and analysis skills. Zara, along with our Director of Studies, Nick McNamara, are also leading our involvement in one of only two Learning Frontiers Design Hubs in Australia. Supported by AITSL (Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership) this project is primarily focussed on connecting schools and other organisations to develop teaching practices and understandings that improve student engagement. 
For the phase 2 Australian Curriculum groups (Physical Education, Home Economic, Technical Studies and the Arts) their day was spent reviewing and redesigning their curricula to meet the skill requirements of the national curriculum. The strategy used by these groups is a ‘Backwards Design’ methodology determining the skills we want students to have learned at the end of the course and then designing learning activities that support the development of these skills. These teams are well advanced in this process and will further engage in the quality teaching program as the year progresses so that they can intertwine their curriculum design with strategies for learning that engage students in their learning.
The School Support Officers engaged in learning about OneNote, a powerful tool that has the potential to increase the efficiency of processes and communication and also to further reduce the reliance on paper processes across the school.
To finish off the day, many of the staff spruced themselves up to attend the school formal. It never ceases to amaze me how different the students look at events like these. The difference between the uniformed students we work with on a daily basis and the elegant, poised young women and debonair, proud young men who arrive at the formal is truly spectacular. I congratulate the students on their presentation and approach to the evening and also the parents who have invested so much in raising these wonderful young people.

Year 12 Formal

The National Wine Centre of Australia was the venue for the 2014 Year 12 Formal. A great venue and equally great weather greeted the students who attended on Friday the 16th of May. I would like to commend students on the way they prepared for the evening – they all looked fantastic and conducted themselves with maturity and dignity. Some girls however, have learnt the hard way that it is important to “wear in” their shoes before the night! Even though they were painful toward the end of the night – they looked great.

The highlights of the evening were the great food including the chocolate fountain, a favourite for many; the student awards which were accepted in good spirits; and the photo booths where students and teachers had some fun. Congratulations to Ellie Crawford and Nikolas Seccafien who were judged to be the best dressed on the night.

I would like to thank Sammy Nutt and Donna Richards-Stone for their work, along with the students that volunteered to be part of the Formal Committee. They certainly thought of everything and the planning and execution of what was a wonderful evening was outstanding.

International Homestay Families NEEDED please!

As an International School, Henley High has up to 70 full time international students and hosts up to 5 short term Study Tours per year.

Students participating in our program are from China, Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Brazil, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Sri Lanka and Italy.

We are required to provide homestay families to accommodate these students. 

Homestay families are paid to host students, this is approximately $35.00 per day for Study Tours and $250 per week for full time students.
Dates for upcoming study tours for 2104 are as follows:
Koishikawa Junior High School, Japan - Term 3, 4 to 15 August 2014
Ushiku  High School, Japan - Term 3, 19 to 30 August 2014
Ritsumeikan, Japan - Term 4, 18 Nov to 3 Dec 2014 TBC

New Henley HS Spray Jacket

We are pleased to announce the addition of a new article of uniform for outdoor wear. The Henley HS Spray jacket has been added to the uniform as an extra layer to be worn over the green jumper for additional warmth and protection from the rain.  A sample of the jacket will be on display in the front foyer from the beginning of term.

Hambours Uniform Shop

We wish to advise that commencing 5 May 2014, the Hambours Uniform Shop at 2 Wilson Street, Royal Park will be reverting to our off-peak trading hours.  These will be as follows:  Monday, Tuesday and Thursday - 8.45am-1.00pm Wednesday and Friday - 1.00pm-4.30pm

Please note that there will be no interruption to access at the Henley High School Uniform Shop or for ordering online which will be maintained for customers to shop at a time that suits them.  Should a customer be unable to attend during the above hours, we are more than happy to make an appointment for them outside of these hours.
