A New Phase for MAIZE

As of 2017, MAIZE and the other CGIAR Research Programs and new Platforms entered Phase-II (2017-2022). MAIZE is currently building on the successes and lessons from Phase-I (2011-2016), some of which you can read about in this edition of the MAIZE Newsletter.

MAIZE Phase-II features the following four (instead of five) Flagship Projects:

FP1 Enhancing MAIZE’s R4D strategy for impact
FP2 Novel diversity and tools for improving genetic gains
FP3 Stress tolerant and nutritious maize
FP4 Sustainable intensification of maize-based systems for improved smallholder livelihoods

The biggest change compared to Phase-I is that MAIZE is no longer a predominantly commodity focused CRP, but an agri-food systems CRP. An agri-food system is an interdependent set of institutions, activities and enterprises that collectively develop and deliver material inputs to the farming sector, produce primary commodities, and subsequently handle, process, transport, market and distribute food and other agro-based products to consumers.

Look out for more news on Phase-II updates in our next Newsletters. Also keep an eye on our website at maize.org for more information on MAIZE activities around the world.

Study reveals diversity "blueprint" to help maize crops adapt to changing climates

Scientists have unlocked evolutionary secrets of landraces through an unprecedented study of allelic diversity, revealing more about the genetic basis of flowering time and how maize adapts to variable environments, according to new research published in Nature Genetics journal. The discovery opens up opportunities to explore and use landrace diversity in new ways to help breeders adapt crops to climate change and other emerging challenges to crop production.
