Animal House

As the plane took off from Finger Lake, Alaska—a remote checkpoint along the 26-stop Iditarod route—Dr. Lee Morgan stood in three feet of snow, suddenly feeling in over his head. He'd been selected to examine the dogs as they came through the checkpoint, just one chapter in a fascinating career working with animals that has culminated in Georgetown. In this week's byGeorge blog, the owner of Georgetown Veterinary Hospital (2916 M St NW) shares his early dreams of being the next Jacques Cousteau, the best advice he's ever received, and his unique experiences working as an amusement park dolphin trainer, to National Geographic's poison arrow frog vet.

Santa Ran Out of Pelotons

GLOW light art installation, or cardio wake-up call? Head down to the waterfront for a fun ride against your friends and some potentially hard fitness truths at Lightbattle—one of 11 Georgetown GLOW light art installations on display through January 5. The free exhibition is the perfect way to close out 2019, and we're even hooking you up with a special Via promo code for the holidays. New riders can download the Via rideshare app and use "GLOW19" for $5 off your first two rides through January 5. Visit our GLOW website for more, including walking tour information, an installation map, and info on each artist!

Bonaparting is Such Sweet Sorrow

They had a crepe run! Cafe Bonaparte (1522 Wisconsin Ave NW) reopened this week as Lutèce by Bonaparte, featuring a new menu under Chef Martin Senoville that includes homemade breads and jam, a vegetarian French onion soup, and lobster French toast. Their popular crepes have sadly disappeared, but there are a lot of new surprises on the menu, plus a renovated interior and a new, six-seat chef's counter. Stop by over the holidays and say bonjour. For a behind-the-scenes look at the fascinating life of the restaurant's owners, the Popal family, check out our byGeorge blog on Shamim and Zubair.

PC Load Letter?

Namaste and all that, but if you're still replaying that Thanksgiving impeachment convo with your Uncle Dale, we recommend some good old-fashioned baseball bat time. One of Halcyon Arts Lab's new winter workshops, Smash Therapy, focuses on the construction and—more enjoyably—deconstruction of word pinatas. During this two-day workshop, Jan. 18-19, you'll identify common threads of tension in your life and society, collectively selecting a word or phrase to represent those tensions. On the final day, you'll channel that energy of frustration and hope, and destroy the created symbol as a therapeutic release. The workshop will introduce you to cultural histories and uses of pinatas, plus healing and releasing rituals. For more info on this and several other amazing Halcyon workshops, visit their website
