We’re writing this email together at a time of global empathy to announce that Halcyon and the Georgetown Business Improvement District (BID) are teaming up to keep small business alive in our neighborhood and beyond, through a crowdfunding campaign.
- The backbone of our economy: 48% of all US employees work for small businesses and 17% for a business with fewer than 20 employees (source).
- Running out of time: 43% of small businesses foresee a permanent shutdown within six months if conditions hold (source), leaving thousands of employees out of work.
- Equity: The smaller the business, the more likely it is to be owned by a woman or person of color (source).
- Required for recovery: As keystones of our economy, healthy small businesses and their workers will help us rebuild from this.
A joint crowdfunding campaign from today through Tuesday, May 5 (#GivingTuesdayNow). All donations will be split evenly between Halcyon’s support for impact-based startups, and Georgetown BID’s relief campaign for thousands of local workers who’ve lost their jobs due to COVID-19. That means for each dollar given to provide emergency relief to small business workers in our neighborhood, another dollar will go to Halcyon’s world-changing fellows committed to creating future jobs and rebuilding from this crisis.
Through the generosity of an anonymous donor, all gifts until the end of #GivingTuesdayNow (May 5, 11:59 p.m.) will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $100,000.
Your gift today—of any size—will double.
