LET'S GET PHYSICAL

May the Force of the A/C Be With You

Remember when we complained it was cold in March? How quaint. In preparation for this weekend's outdoor hellscape, we've gathered plenty of indoor activities in Georgetown to help you cool off. Catch a movie at AMC Loews Theatres (3111 K St NW), go bowling at Pinstripes (1064 Wisconsin Ave NW), get your Ghost on at Hinckley Pottery (Blues Alley), sing along at Georgetown Piano Bar (3287 M St NW) or Gypsy Sally's (3401 K St NW), peruse the latest titles at several bookstores, search for an old favorite at Hill & Dale Records (1054 31st St NW, Ste #010), solve a series of puzzles at Escape Room Live (3345 M St NW), check out the small businesses and boutiques along Wisconsin Avenue, eat your way through Georgetown—including at Via Umbria's Summer Feast, or get a lesson in history at Tudor Place (1644 31st St NW), Dumbarton House (2715 Q St NW), or the Old Stone House (3051 M St NW). If you're really feel wild, brave the heat and run through the fountain at Georgetown Waterfront Park.

I Scream, You Scream

Now here's a holiday we can get behind. In honor of National Ice Cream Day, Insomnia Cookies (3204 O St NW) is offering a free scoop of dairy deliciousness with any in-store purchase on Sunday, July 21. Afterward, keep the party going at the rest of Georgetown's ice cream shops—because one scoop is just a tease.

Goat For It

Fifty miles from the Russian border, Tosca Metz grew up in rural Mongolia—the daughter of a farmer and a seamstress. Surrounded by horses, cows and cashmere goats, she spent her childhood learning how to sew—the nomadic herders always at work in the background. In this week's byGeorge blog, the owner of Book Hill's T&U Mongolian Cashmere by GOBI (1663 Wisconsin Ave NW) shares how she eventually married those worlds more than 6,000 miles away, why Mongolian goats are the stars of the show, and the importance of supporting small, women-owned businesses in her home country while also launching her own line.

Little Miss 100 Degrees of Sunshine

This picture summarizes our feelings about the weekend forecast. But good news—it'll be back down to 86 for our July 23 screening of Little Miss Sunshine at Georgetown Sunset Cinema. Bundle up and watch Olive & Co. make their way to Redondo Beach in that sweet yellow Volkswagen. Movies start at sunset, but arrive early to get a good spot on the lawn at Georgetown Waterfront Park. RSVP through Facebook, and check out our Georgetown Sunset Cinema page for this summer's entire movie line-up.

Meanwhile, No One's Checked on Grandma

What a time to be alive. Or, rather, nearly dead. It's 2019, and there is now such a thing as a houseplant rehabilitation center. Brought to you by two Haylcon Arts Lab fellows, the Georgetown-based Very Sad Lab offers intake and rehabilitation for dying houseplants--examining, diagnosing, and creating treatment plans, and teaching owners how to care for their plants moving forward. Free and open to the public by appointment (through Instagram), the lab is located in a Halcyon Arts Lab studio space, and will eventually explore home visits and pop-up events—thanks, in part, to a grant from the Awesome Foundation. Oh Baby!

Hear that unfamiliar sound? Ahh yes--it's silence. If you need a short reprieve from summer vacation with the kids, Veritas City Church (3255 K St NW) is hosting a Parent’s Night Out on July 20 from 5 pm - 7:30 pm. Bring your little ones for a night of fun while you enjoy an evening to yourself. Knock out some errands, go on a date, spend the night rocking in the fetal position—whatever you need to do. The cost is $10 per child--but isn't this priceless? Register here!
