What we're talking about this week:
George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery ✊🏿
COVID surprise 🚀
and moooore

get started.

✊🏿
names to know: George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery
summed up: We are dedicated to being an anti-racist resource for our readers.

👍
An explanation...
The deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery have moved the US into action. There have been demonstrations all across the country and beyond to protest racism and police violence.

So what does this mean?
It is our job to speak up, show up, and listen to people of color. There are many different ways of doing this... the most important thing is to actively learn, grow, and continuously work on being anti-racist.

Here's what you can do:
The following information is largely adapted from work by Ibram X. Kendi, author of How to Be an Antiracist.

1. Understand the definition of racist as "one who is supporting a racist policy through their actions or inaction or expressing a racist idea"

2. Stop saying "I'm not racist" because it is defensive and stops you from embracing decidedly anti-racist views and beliefs

3. Identify racial inequities and disparities in politics, healthcare, criminal justice, education, income, and just about every sector of private and public life

4. Confront racist ideas you've held or continue to hold because people can hold racist ideas without realizing they are biased

Anything else?
The Root gives us a platform to speak to over 1000 people every week. We cannot stand silent while Black communities are suffering. We have a responsibility to speak up and educate. Black lives matter.

We'd like to start an anti-racist bookclub. If you are interested in joining, please fill out this form.

stay informed.

🚀
Thanks, COVID!
summed up: The US economy shocked just about everyone by adding over two million jobs last month.

Explain...
In April, US jobs fell by 20.7M BUT in May US jobs rose by 2.5M (!!) This rise in jobs can explained through the industries that were hit hardest by the pandemic-- leisure and hospitality, construction, and retail-- beginning to hire again.

🙍
What does this mean?
We... were not expecting this. No one was. Not a single forecast expected any improvement in unemployment numbers. This means investors are looking forward to the US economy improving BUT it's important to stay realistic. With no real signs of a COVID vaccine coming any time soon, there's worry about a potential second wave and another hit at the economy. Ugh... Corona, you never cease to surprise us.
