122 Conversations: person to person, art beyond borders
122 Conversations: Person to Person, Art Beyond Borders is an artist led project based on the art of engagement—art derived from the process of interconnection and cross-cultural dialogue. Organized by the Tweed Museum of Art and in collaboration with Duluth Sister Cities, International and University of Minnesota Duluth, School of Fine Arts, the project celebrates the combined 122 years of relationship with Duluth’s five sister Cities: Rania, Iraqi Kurdistan, Växjö, Sweden, Petrozavodsk, Russia, Thunder Bay, Canada and Ohara-Isumi City, Japan. The project is a catalyst for positive social change, one individual at a time.
The artwork in the exhibition represents two years of planning and 60 Skype or in person interviews involving ten residents from each of the six sister cities, including the mayor of each city. The large scale paintings were created by Labovitz in her studio and are inspired by the spirited interview exchanges. Each of the artworks depict an interpretative vision of the conversations that include faces, words, and descriptions of the experiences that relate to the individuals involved. The work chronicles the essence of human interaction through relational listening into palimpsest paintings and video. An integral component is a public invitation for attendees to contribute to an anthology of stories. All are invited to contribute to the exhibition using materials provided, transforming their responses to the exhibition into art pieces that will, in turn, travel with the show as it progresses from each city onto its culminating venue at the Tweed Museum of Art in Duluth in 2018.

122 Conversations – Exibits opening around the world!

The project continues this amazing journey to our Duluth Sister Cities around the world. The initial opening was last fall in Thunder Bay, Ontario - our closest Sister City.

Rania, Iraqi Kurdistan - January, 2017.
In January, the exibit travelled to Rania, Iraqi Kurdistan. The works of art were delivered by a delegation of citizens from Duluth representing Duluth Sister Cities, International. The official Opening was January 16th. The event was a great success and very well attended.

Växjö, Sweden, March 2017
The next and third installment of 122 Conversations will take place in Sweden next week. Labovitz will be in Växjö for the event at the Växjö Konsthall (Municipal Art Gallery). The Opening is March 4th. While there, Labovitz will lead workshops with students and connect with citizens at an official dinner celebrating 30 years as a Växjö-Duluth Sister City. The exhibition runs for 4 weeks. At right, Labovitz and Anders Franzén work, via Skype, on preparations for the installment and Opening in Växjö.

Tyvec in the Studio122 Conversations has undergone some very exciting changes. The central pieces are now created using Tyvek (yes, Tyvek!) as it is very light weight and can be transported easily. Discovering new materials, experimenting with them and creating art is a process that thrills and invigorates Labovitz. Utilizing this process for 122 Conversations is not only excitingPacked up but vital to the success of this unique and treasured project. At left, experimenting with Tyvek in the studio. And at right, the entire exhibit shipped to Rania, Iraqi Kurdistan in this suitcase thanks to the lightweight Tyvek.
