What is 122 Conversations?
Artist122 Conversations is a joint collaboration on a traveling visual arts exhibition with Duluth Sister Cities International, Tweed Museum/School of Fine Art, University of Minnesota Duluth and Professional Artist Anne Labovitz. The exhibition will focus on the culture and people of Duluth’s Sister Cities around the globe: Thunder Bay, Canada; Ohara-Isumi City, Japan; Rania, Iraqi Kurdistan; Växjö, Sweden and Petrozavodsk, Russia. This collaboration will span 2 years from 2015-2017. As part of the project, DCSI and Anne Labovitz will be visiting most of the cities to offer educational events and attend opening and closing events.

The Process.
The activities will begin with a Skype session or face-to-face spirited interviews between Ms. Labovitz and participants. The artist will inscribe the conversations through drawing, painting or carving. The artfully documented conversations will be applied and overlapped in layers on paper, and then prepared for display in the traveling exhibition. Artworks will include faces, words, and descriptions of the experiences that relate to the participants. Each participant will receive an official certificate of participation with information that will give him/her access to post their responses and ideas on the website as well as to see what others have posted as the project progresses.

Next will be a Skype conversation with participants in Vaxjo, Sweden on February 8. In April, Ms. Labovitz will travel to Thunder Bay to connect with participants. She will also be present in Duluth on July 3 to welcome and connect with the Japanese delegation from Ohara who will be in Duluth visiting at that time.

Did you know?
President Dwight D Eisenhower came up with the Sister City idea in the wake of WWII. President Eisenhower acknowledged the “brutality, futility and stupidity” of war. The idea was to connect citizens from across the globe outside of government or official channels. This grass roots ideas was formed to challenge humanity world wide to form constructive "people-to-people partnerships".
