World Mental Health Day
A good time to learn the history of Happy Planet

I think of lots of the people I have met through Happy Planet as friends now rather than customers and I know some of you feel the same. This month is very special for me in that I am publishing my first book, a volume of poetry that tells the story of a friendship that grew from a chance meeting in Warsaw and eventually I married Yelena in Siberia. Happy Planet was originally going to be in New Zealand, but sadly shortly before we were due to emigrate to a new life, Yelena was killed in an accident. That was the beginning of darker times for me and I have battled with depression and post-traumatic stress disorder over the past three years. Happily I am now on the road to recovery so I decided to publish my book 'Lines From An Unfinished Love Song' this month to celebrate World Mental Health Day, as well as to help others who may be struggling with their own mental health, or to help to inform about a condition that is often misunderstood.

I have a 'Meet the Poet' event at Whitley Bay library on Tuesday 24th October at 7 pm and I am asking everyone I know to come and support me, as my confidence in public is still very much in its infancy and this event is designed to boost that and enable me to move to the next level. Tickets are free but you are required to book a seat by phoning Whitley Bay library 0191 643 5390, or calling into any North Tyneside library. There will be a bar at the event, so you can enjoy a glass. The book is being sold in aid of Rape Crisis Tyneside and Northumberland and will be available at the event as well as in the shop, together with cards of the original book cover design I also made.

I hope you can support me in this in the way you have all supported Happy Planet in so many other ways.

A New Year and A New Charity

Most visitors to Happy Planet will be aware that the business has been supporting the local Tyneside branch of the Samaritans as my charity of the year. You, our customers and friends have donated freely both directly into the charity box as well as purchasing small items for a donation. Together we have raised £149 which will be heading to the Samaritans very shortly to help them in their work. A big thank you to all of our customers who helped to raise the much-needed funds for a local charity that helps anyone who needs it.

Our new Charity of the year is Rape Crisis Tyneside & Northumberland. They support women and girls (over 13 years old) who live, work or study in Tyneside and Northumberland who have experienced sexual violence. They provide free, safe and professional support, through face-to-face counseling, support on a telephone helpline and over email. They also provide a telephone helpline is 0800 035 2794 on Tuesday - Thursday (6 pm - 8.30 pm), Friday (11 am – 2 pm). Funding for such charities is becoming more and more difficult to attain while sadly the need for their services is still an everyday occurrence. I hope you will all be as supportive of them as you can.

Inpress Books are now stocking us – Yippee!

For all of our friends who are avid readers, you may wish to know that we are now being stocked by Inpress books. Inpress is a Newcastle based company that represents 40 independent publishers across the UK. It sells their books online and gets them onto the shelves of your local bookshop. We asked them if they would stock us exclusively and they said yes. This is brilliant news because it means, we are their one and only exclusive outlet so we have a lovely stock of new and varied books and we may well team up with them in future to host cosy little events for those of us who love a good read.
