Edition 22 - January 2021

Welcome to 2021

It's common at the start of a new year for pundits to look back over the past year and to predict what's going to happen during the next 12 months. It is unfair to point out that nearly every prediction for 2020 was completely wrong. Even so we're not going to make any sweeping statements about the year ahead except for this: Beacon fees will not increase. Read the article below for more information.

In December we published a statement from APT Solutions about the Beacon 2 development. Today I bring you a statement from the Beacon 2 Project Team that describes the progress they have made over the last month and their immediate plans.

We're also introducing Beacon Service Notifications. This new Help Centre  feature allows you to sign up for email notification of new incidents and notices affecting Beacon 1. To back the notifications up there will be information about each incident published on the Help Centre.

Finally, this month's Beacon News finishes with another of our occasional Beacon People articles in which we introduce John Alexander, who leads the busy documentation team.

Beacon 2 Project Update

In the last Beacon News we gave a statement from our delivery partner, APT Solutions, about the challenges the upgrade project had faced in 2020 and what had been planned to enable us to move forward positively in 2021.

Now the u3a Beacon 2 Project team has published a project update. They have made good progress. They have prepared a global style guide to ensure that every part of Beacon 2 looks and works in a consistent, understandable and accessible manner.

The Beacon 2 team and APT have been moving ahead with reviewing the requirements of Beacon 2's key modules. Meanwhile each of the Beacon 2 subteams has been working towards Beacon 2.Click the link below for the full story.

Beacon Fees Unchanged

The Third Age Trust Trading Limited confirmed earlier this month the the Beacon subscription of £1 per member per year will be unchanged for the 2021/22 financial year.

Beacon is therefore even better value. It provides so much for u3as and their members for the price of a packet of biscuits.

The Beacon Help Centre has a new section, Beacon 1 Service Notifications. Details of incidents and notices affecting Beacon 1 are being published on the Help Centre and you can choose to receive emails notifying you of new events.

Meet John Alexander

In the third of our Beacon People articles we introduce John Alexander. John is from Four Border Abbeys u3a in the borders country. He leads the Beacon documentation team which is, as you might expect, very busy.

John's message to Beacon users is a practical one: He reminds us that the Beacon Help Centre is a great place to find assistance when you can't be sure how things work. As you can search for a subject it makes it easy to use. Just go into Beacon User Guide from within your Beacon site.
