National Advocacy Conference

The team just came back from Washington D.C. where we attended the National Advocacy Conference. At this conference we learned about the Every Student Succeeds Act, specifically Title IV Part A which gives funds to schools which can be used for after school STEM activities. We also learned about the Perkins Act and how it expired in 2012 and overdue for a re authorization. We took this knowledge and went to Capital Hill to talk to our members of Congress about it.

Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos

As part of a larger group one mentor and one student from our team attending a meeting with the Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos. During the meeting we talked to here about how important it is to get the Perkins Act reauthorized. Fatima also talked to her directly about what it has meant for her to be part of FIRST Robotics team.

Senator Elizabeth Warren

The team talked to Senator Warren about the Perkins Act and the Every Student Succeeds Act. She is on the HELP Committee (Health, Education, Labor and Pensions) so she has a direct influence over how much money is allocated for these bills.

Senator Edward Markey

The team also talked to Senator Markey's office about the Perkins Act and ESSA Title IV Part A. They were very receptive of it and agrred with everything we were saying.

Representative James McGovern

When we visited Representative James McGovern we talked to him about the same topics but also thanked him for coming to one of our meetings and attending a competition.

FIRST President Don Bossi

We also talked to FIRST President Don Bossi at the conference. This picture was taken in front of the Capital Building.

Southern New England Advocacy Conference

On July 15th and 16th we will be attending the Southern New England Advocacy Conference. This is a local version of the National Advocacy Conference where we will be talking with our state leaders. Details can be found at http://sneac.info/

Many members of the team have been working on a website for all FIRST teams to use. It is called Find Robot Parts and can be found at http://findrobotparts.com/.

The goal is to make it easier to find the part you need without having to visit dozens of different websites.
