Art Lives Here.
"I’m really grateful to SMALL TOWN * BIG ART, Adaptations Dance Theater and the County of Maui for this coming together. I strongly believe that art should be accessible and it should be in public spaces. It should be seen and shared, and it takes a step of a whole place, a whole community, a whole island for that to really happen — and for everyone to believe that it should be funded, it should be seen. I just feel tremendously grateful for this project and these organizations, that they’re making an effort to do that and to kind of change the way that artists are able to work."

 — Hallie Hunt, Artistic Director of Adaptations Dance Theater

Choreographed and performed by contemporary dance company Adaptations Dance Theater, a set of three free, half-hour performances led small groups of pre-registered audience members through outdoor locations along Market Street last month — much in the spirit of a treasure hunt or pub crawl — to encourage (re)engagement with these spaces and create the opportunity to make new memories and shared experiences. Working with SMALL TOWN * BIG ART, dancers spent time scouting performance sites, workshopping their idea with community members, choreographing and rehearsing, and selecting ‘ōlelo no‘eau: E kūlia i ka nu‘u (strive to reach the summit) in partnership with the Maui Historical Society to further root the Wailuku Dance Crawl in a sense of place.

Wailuku Town Self-Guided Walking Tour: PUBLIC ART

We’re often asked for printed maps of the artwork throughout Wailuku Town. Because the collection — by design — is temporary and ever changing, we’ve responded with a virtual map, housed at SMALLTOWNBIG.ORG/MAP, as well as a free mobile app entitled Hoʻokamaʻāina, (which translates as “to become familiar with”), which you’ll find at MAUIMUSEUM.ORG/APP. Each of these spaces link to video clips, behind the scenes photos, community consultations, press, artist statements and more — which ultimately offer far more than a printed map in terms of how people can interact with the art.

Please enjoy our 2-minute project film and let us know how we can improve your experience!

Developed through an Our Town grant by the National Endowment for the Arts, SMALL TOWN * BIG ART is a creative placemaking collaboration of County of Maui and Hale Hōʻikeʻike at the Bailey House/ Maui Historical Society that aims to develop Wailuku, Hawaiʻi as a public arts district focused on its distinctive sense of place, history and culture.

Engaging the public in both the process and the product, ongoing art installations such as plays, murals, sculptures, storytelling events and more are created with community input that align with ‘ōlelo from Mary Kawena Pukui's ‘Ōlelo No‘eau: Hawaiian Proverbs and Political Sayings. Each artwork is spearheaded by professional artists that have submitted project applications exhibiting exceptional quality, style, experience in creating communal or public art and significance to Wailuku. Through many hands and many voices, these creative interpretations represent a revitalized identity for this small town with the BIGGEST heart.
