Dear Friends and Supporters of the Maya Centre

The Maya Centre carries on supporting women’s mental health in North London, despite the turbulence around us all!

It’s hard to get consistent and continuous funding for 1-1 therapy but we’ve seen more women, worked in many different languages, achieved consistently strong outcomes and positive feedback from our clients. We’ve brought our waiting list down to just over a month, though demand for all our services is even higher. Our Art Therapy Group and the Black Women’s Group in particular have been heavily over subscribed. Over the year we have delivered 1:1 therapy to 180 women.

We were very sad that The Women’s Therapy Centre closed in April, and relieved that we could take their share of NHS funding to continue a women only service. Together with Nafsiyat we won a two year contract with Homes for Haringey to provide post-domestic violence counselling to women, and are delighted that we can support Haringey women at such a difficult time in their lives.

Fundraising and Donations

We were delighted to be chosen to benefit from the Tracey Emin-Deutsche Bank Centenary Award. Several private individuals have held fundraisers like a pub quiz, dance classes or run a marathon for us, one yoga teacher is donating her income from a week’s classes to us - it’s great to have such friends!

These donations, along with the regular standing orders which many of you already make, directly provide therapy. So please click on the donate button below and if you possibly can, make a regular donation, every £ really does help the women that we support.

Big Lottery Workshops

As part of our community outreach, our service-user volunteers planned a series of workshops addressing self-management of mental ill-health. These were attended by 80 women and included self defence, storytelling and 'vulva-making'- do check out our Instagram page to see them all! Funded by Big Lottery’s Awards for All, many of the session leaders generously worked for free, so many more women were able to get support, and gave extremely positive feedback.

Ambassadors & Fundraisers

We’re very excited that the actor Siobhan McSweeney visited and offered to be our ambassador! She introduced a brilliant sell-out fundraising comedy night organised by Big Mouth in October, and we hope to be part of more such events in the new year - so keep an eye on our social media!

Everyday Ways to Support Our Work

There are a number of ways that you can support us on a day to day basis. If you or someone you know is running an event or fundraiser consider donating a percentage of the profits to the Maya Centre. If you aren't able to run an event- attend one- follow our social media pages to see what we are up to! In the new year SMC Productions will be running a fundraiser with a line up featuring some of musical theatre's leading ladies- click this link to buy a ticket: Plus if you shop online  you can use EasyFundraising or Amazon Smile UK to donate to us while you shop.

Thank you all so much for your continued support and best wishes for 2020.
