You may be aware that Achieving for Children have successfully bid to the Department for Education to open an new Special School for ASD in Chessington. Kingston Educational Trust which, 4 years ago, opened The Kingston Academy (rated Outstanding by Ofsted May 2018) are now looking support this venture with their own bid to develop and run the school to support young people and their families in the Kingston and Richmond areas.

Kingston Educational Trust would like to warmly invite local parents to a consultation event on Wednesday 11th September 2019 at The Kingston Academy between 10.00 and 11.30am. This will provide parents (who are likely to have a special interest in a new ASD Special School) with the opportunity to find out more about our plans for the new school but also help to provide ideas and help shape this new provision. The consultation will be led by colleagues from the Trust.

Early Birds at the Science Museum is a sensory friendly morning for families with children who need a quieter environment to enjoy the museum.

This event is suitable for children who benefit from visiting the museum free from the hustle and bustle of the general public (for example, children with autism spectrum conditions or sensory processing differences).

As well as exploring some of the galleries, you can enjoy a selection of fun workshops in a gallery space, available exclusively for Early Birds guests until 11.00.  There will also be quiet areas for those needing to take a break. More details on exactly what to expect on the day will be sent out in advance of each Early Birds event.

The Early Birds accessible events are completely free and suitable for families with children aged 4–15. Siblings are welcome to attend, but all children and adults attending the event will need to book. Booking opens 6th September.

Chessington Garden Centre are running SEND sessions for Halloween Spooky Zoo and Christmas Wonderland / Santa Grotto experience.

Counselling Sessions Available from September
We set up our counselling service because many people told us that they would find it helpful to have a space to talk through the impact of having a child with special needs. It will be no surprise for you to learn that parents and carers of children with special needs are disproportionately affected by mental health difficulties. Yet it is also often very difficult for parents to give time to looking after themselves, including accessing services which would support their well-being, such as counselling.

You don't have to be in crisis or feeling really low to access this service - we are here for anyone who would just like to have the opportunity to talk to someone one to one, in a confidential and non-judgemental space. Seeking support before it all becomes overwhelming can be a good idea. We are also available for other family members, such as Grandparents, who may be struggling with caring or coming to terms with a member of the family having an autism or other diagnosis.

If you are interested in counselling or would like more information, please contact No referral is needed.

The HOC Education Committee have published their report on school and college funding in which they make 20 recommendations, including calling for a 10 year plan and more funding for #SEND

Put your old pound coins to work.

The Charities Aid Foundation is urging people to donate their old pound coins to good causes.

The plea comes after it was revealed that £145 million worth of old-style pound coins were still in circulation after they were discontinued in October 2017.

New 12-sided bimetallic £1 coins were introduced to combat forgeries but there are millions of old-style coins still sitting in the country’s piggy banks, change jars and down the back of the UK’s sofas. They cannot be spent in shops but can still be redeemed at banks or given to charity.

You can donate your old pound coins to

#happyinschool developed by dynamic autism advocate and author Suzy Rowland, is a series of fun interactive workshops for parents, examining the issues around Autism and ADHD in school.
The sessions are full of useful ideas and suggestions which focus on building positive relationships between parents and educators, especially around sensitive issues such as additional support, ECHPs and classroom behaviour. Parents learn simple techniques that can be applied in the classroom and at home.

The workshops are fun, interactive and cover a range of topics ranging from exclusions to making friends at school. Previous workshops included:
  • Challenges at School
  • Play, Friendships
  • Behaviour
  • Building Relationships with School
  • Building Resilience, Learning Opportunities
  • Transitions
  • Self Care, Advocates & Allies
“One thing I really enjoyed about the presentation was the shared experience”
“I really enjoyed hearing everyone else’s views”
‘The sharing and discussion was really open; my only comment is that (I wish) more dads, uncles, and other members of the families attended!
“Any parent would be happy to have this workshop to give them a little knowledge and guidance and as R said, I too feel more empowered especially ahead of the initial EHCP discussion” Mrs. B, Surrey.

If you would like to book a place on any of the sessions in the new term

Access Card | Making access easy

What is the Access Card?

Information, Evidence, Discounts and Opportunities for Disabled People

The Access Card is a card like no other, we translate your disability / impairment into symbols which highlight the barriers you face and the reasonable adjustments you might need.

This then informs providers quickly and discreetly about the support you need and may gain you access to things like concessionary ticket prices and complex reasonable adjustments without having to go into loads of personal detail.

It’s all based on your rights under the Equality Act and providers responsibilities.

Post 16 Opportunities Pack and new Next Steps Pack for SEND learners have been published

The above packs have now been uploaded to the Local Offer website here:
