Economic Development Strategy Adopted by Council

On August 22, Council adopted the 2017 – 2020 Economic Development Strategy.  The strategy focuses on five main themes, accompanied by an action plan for each.  The five pillars are:
  1. Adopt a City-wide focus
  2. Grow specific business sectors
  3. Encourage a positive community business culture
  4. Align and inspire City resources
  5. Attract and retain a new generation of great entrepreneurs and workforce.
Implementation plans are currently being finalized by staff and work is beginning to achieve results.  The strategy can be viewed on the City’s website at: https://www.kawarthalakes.ca/en/business-growth/reports-and-studies.aspx
Downtown Revitalization Update

We're excited to share that we have recruited for and scheduled our Downtown Revitalization Interview Panel to meet with local community members who submitted an application to sit on the Committee.

Once this Committee has made its selection and presented those names to Council we'll be ready to move forward with our first meeting of the Downtown Revitalization Advisory Council.
Things are Go, Go, Go for Tom Collver

You may have caught Tom Collver in the lead role in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat playing at the Academy Theatre in August. This talented individual is also a busy local entrepreneur who has a role to play in many businesses.

To read more about Tom, his businesses and which superhero he’d be most likely to hire visit our website.

Downtown Bobcaygeon benefiting from Starter Company PLUS

The KLSBEC is proud to have supported the launch of three downtown Bobcaygeon businesses through Starter Company PLUS:

Granny Bird’s Wool Shoppe – 5 King St. E., Bobcaygeon

A passion of yarn and knitting, and a desire to fulfill a life long dream of owning a wool shop is where the story of Granny Bird’s Wool Shoppe began. The Shoppe is named in the memory of a very special lady in my life who I referred to as Granny Bird. She was a lady of elegance and class, which inspired me in the design of the Shoppe.

Bobcaygeon Bakery – 9 King St. E., Bobcaygeon

Here at Bobcaygeon Bread Company Ltd. we are committed to producing quality, fresh baked goods. Our recipes build on a family tradition of home baking and an appreciation for good food. We hope that you enjoy our favourites as much as we do.

Shining Waters Soap Company – 79 Bolton St. Unit D., Bobcaygeon

Nothing artificial, everything beneficial, made to nourish your skin and leave you feeling your best. Pure, natural and vegan; without harmful preservatives. My products are made in small quantities to ensure quality. Free of artificial ingredients and fillers, made with you and the environment in mind.

These businesses received formal training, on-going mentoring and a $4,000 Provincial grant. Interested in learning more about Starter Company PLUS? Contact Brayden Siersma, KLSBEC Program Coordinator.
That’s a Wrap

On August 17th the Summer Company participants gathered with the KLSBEC mentors and staff one last time for the programs Wrap-Up event held in Bobcaygeon. The Summer Company participants were taken on a tour of local businesses run by participants from the Starter Company Plus program.

The business owners shared their experiences as entrepreneurs to the Summer Company participants. Interested in learning more about the Summer Company Program? Visit our webpage at KLSBEC.ca or our Facebook page for the Kawartha Lakes Small Business and Entrepreneurship Centre.

Accessibility Tip
How Easy is Your Store to Navigate?

Consider how customers and visitors will move throughout your store. Providing a clear path of travel between all elements in the space such as a checkout counter, display racks, shelving, seating spaces, etc. creates a comfortable shopping experience for people with disabilities/older adults. A great shopping experience equals happy, loyal customers.
