Summer has arrived! For most households, this includes some time for relaxation and refreshment. The long days and warm weather allow us to enjoy God’s creation in a wide variety of ways. I hope you are able to take advantage of those times.

As people of faith, let me suggest a couple considerations. First, please do deliberately notice the beauty and grandeur of God’s abundant blessings. Faith is not for Sundays only, but can help us connect to God each day in every place. Second, if you are blessed to have some renewing time, I’d suggest balancing that between care for yourself and tending to the most important relationships in your life. If all your time is with family and friends, you may miss out on needed solitude. If all is solitude, you will lose chances to strengthen the bonds that make your relationships life-giving. Third, routines can be very beneficial, but doing something out of the ordinary is helpful, too. Fourth, please do not neglect worship. Whether you are here or away, try to connect with a faith community in some way. If you are around, there’s always a need for volunteers to work on the property, help with worship or organize supplies.

Summer is also a time when people get to do some extra reading. In our Wednesday Adult Education group we are working our way through Rachel Held Evans book Inspired; you can join the discussion at any point if you are interested. The description about the book says: “If the Bible isn’t a science book, instruction manual, or position paper, then what is it? New York Times bestselling author Rachel Held Evans invites readers on a journey of rediscovery as she explores the magic of the Bible, engaging the old, familiar stories in new ways that honor the past and enlighten the present.”
What are you planning on reading this summer? Do you have options for fun, for learning, for growing? If you run across something you like, feel free to share it on the members Facebook group. If you are looking for something that might impact your faith, talk to me and I’ll try to point you in the direction of something interesting.
As always let us know about your travel plans and we’ll make sure to add you to the list of people we are praying for that weekend.  If you want to worship while you’re away, we can help you find a place to visit.

-Pastor Chris

NURTURE GROUP REPORT

Worship
The last day of our Holden Wednesday evening services will be August 28.  Everyone appreciated being outside in the evening for music and worship. Thank you to all who helped with these services.
Our regular 10:30 services will resume on September 1.
September 29 will be the last day of our 8:30 outside service, weather permitting.
Choir rehearsals will begin Thursday September 5, the first Thursday after Labor Day.

Confirmation
On June 9, Damian Vince, Joan Vince, Katie Molini, Natasha Polay, and Lauren Smith celebrated the Affirmation of Baptism at the 10:30am service. Congratulations to all of them achieving this milestone in their faith journey.

Baptisms
On June 2 and June 30, Holy Counselor welcomed as children of God, Hunter Paul Bermel, son of Alfred Bermel and Amanda Schupp and Quinn Avery Riley, daughter of Shawn & Katie Riley.
NJ Synod, ELCA Annual Assembly
On June 6, representatives from many churches gathered together at the Synod Assembly. This year Pastor Chris, Jamie, and Steve and Kathy Baumann attended this three day gathering. They worshipped together, elected members to the synod council, and re-elected our Presiding Bishop, Tracie Bartholomew. Reports and concerns celebrations of accomplishments were shared by ministry partners and the synod council and committees. Visit www.njsynod.org/assembly to learn more about this year’s gathering, (including why on earth there were over 100 wooden cows in the ballroom!)
OUTREACH GROUP REPORT
Submitted by  Emilie Dupont, Outreach Group Coordinator, & the church office

Food Pantry
Our food pantry gave out 22 bags of groceries in May and June, and we received a good size food donation from the New Jersey Herald's collection drive known as "Food Stock".  Thank you Larry Polagye for picking up the food! Please continue to donate toiletries and packaged food to the food pantry.

WELCA
WELCA meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 10 AM. The next meeting is on  August 20, unless otherwise stated in the weekly announcements. Contact Marlene Clements if you are interested in joining.

Outreach to the Homebound
Please contact Sandy Wardell if you know someone who cannot make it to church anymore, but would still like a friendly visit and a CD recording of our services. We can even lend you a CD player! Sandy’s cell number is (973) 362-8590.

Prayer Shawls
Do you enjoy knitting or crocheting? Do you know someone who is cold all the time and would like a handmade prayer shawl or lap robe? Contact Adele Huttner to learn how you can make one, or to tell her about anyone you know who could use one.  It is a ministry of love for people both in our church and outside of it.

PAST OUTREACH EVENTS

Bags for Bucks Fundraiser
May 11, we received $.20 for each pound of clothes, linens and toys we collected, which was over 3,782 pounds. Our total income was $756.42. Of this, $340.39 went toward our parking lot fund, $340.39 went to our general fund, and $75.64 went to mission support.  Thank you to Denise Urbaniak and Marge Kranz for organizing this easy fundraiser! Also a big thanks to our helpers, Frank Urbaniak, Elaine Kuntz, Pam Kucks, Wynn White, Adele Huttner and everyone who donated an amazing amount of stuff! We will be holding another one in the fall, so please start sorting your donations this summer.
Car Wash Fundraiser
May 19, Doug, Damian and Joan Vince, Rebekah, Elijah and Oliver Bruesehoff, Joey Villano and Emilie Dupont washed about 20 cars during both the 8:30 and 10:30 services to raise $290 for camperships.  It was great to finally have a sunny day to do the car wash!

The Littman String Quartet
May 18, approximately 30 listeners were treated to the beautiful sounds of Bach and Beethoven performed by the Littman Quartet. This is a highly accomplished professional string quartet, and we welcome them back to play again in the fall or winter.
Cinco de Mayo Fundraiser
May 5, Diane Rossi and the Confirmation class hosted a Mexican buffet to help fund camperships.  Francine Vince did the cooking and made many different kinds of Mexican food.  There were also Mexican arts and crafts and lots of singing at this fun evening.  We collected $266 to put toward camperships.
Vernon Day
The PAL’s Vernon Day and Food Truck Festival was held on June 2. Holy Counselor once again had a tent at the event to promote our church. Special thanks to Marge Kranz, Steve Baumann, Denise Urbaniak, and Emilie Dupont who did a great job at our table welcoming friends and creating some fabulous artwork too!
Holy Counselor Lutheran Church 1st Annual Golf Outing

Mark your calendars! Holy Counselor will be holding a golf outing at Black Bear Golf Club on September 18 beginning at 7:30am. Debbie Morris will be coordinating this fundraiser.  Sponsor letters and brochures are being constructed and will need to be sent out to potential sponsors. SO, if you know a golfer or a business that would like to participate in the outing, please contact Debbie at the church office and she will be happy to email or mail out information to them. She will also need some willing hands to help organize this event. If you can help, please let her know. This can be a large profitable fundraiser for our church, so please consider helping out.

Let the SON Shine In Giving Challenge

In June we began our Let the Son Shine In giving challenge. Please help us close our deficit during the summer months. Take a ray of sunshine in the amount you are able to give above your normal offering and place in the offering plate. Let’s make our SON shine in during the next few weeks! See our bulletin board in the narthex for your “ray”.

Meeting/Event scheduling:
All events at Holy Counselor need to be added to the church calendar by the office to avoid unnecessary conflicts. Please let the church office know at least one month in advance if your group or family would like to hold a meeting or event at the church, so it can be entered properly. Thank you ☺
