Dear Friends of Passage

We are looking forward to celebrating with you the second anniversary of Passage in the coming months. These two years have flown by in a flash and to mark this important time for us, we will be seeing the launch of our official Passage website, with the hopes that it will be viewed and used as an relevant, living resource for the English-speaking community here in Luxembourg.

The website can best be described as a labour of love for those involved and as a continuous work in progress, since we will be frequently adding essential information and amending to it as our own knowledge grows and your feedback is applied. We are also most fortunate to have dedicated practitioners and professionals who have volunteered to contribute content, so ultimately the Passage website will be holistic and accessible on many fronts in its approach to children and parenting issues. Please watch this space for more details nearer the time of launch.

So without further ado, here's the latest news from Passage...

NEW English-language Online Help Service launched by Kanner Jugendtelefon

We would like to inform you of a new service for parents in the English-speaking community in Luxembourg. The established Kanner Jugendtelefon launched an anonymous and confidential online help for parents via their website last week. Following the results of a survey amongst English-speaking parents and children last year, the most popular choice was for an online service for parents, and a website for children and young people (to be launched later this year).

We would encourage you to tell other parents, professionals and organisations about this service. Fully-trained and supervised volunteers are waiting to answer any question big or small to do with parenting in Luxembourg.

For more information please go to the KJT website www.kjt.lu/en/parents/online-help-parents where you can ask a question, download a flier pdf www.kjt.lu/images/KJT-OnlineHelp-Flyer.pdf or request further information .

Thank You

Upcoming Parenting Seminars at the Lycée Michel Lucius in February & April

Two dates to pencil into your Spring diaries are the upcoming parenting seminars organised by the Lycée Michel Lucius. The first on Tuesday 10th February will feature two speakers who will focus on the subjects "Provocation by teenagers - how to handle them?" and "Drugs - Parents info" respectively.

Proposed agenda for Tuesday 10th February:
7pm:  "Provocation by teenagers - How to handle them?"
presented by Ms. Marielle Dorsert, Graduated Educator, Family Counsellor

8pm:  "Drugs - Parents info"
presented by Mrs. Susana Ribeiro, Psychologist from Impuls

Presentations in Luxembourgish start at 7pm, but there will be simultaneous translations in both English and French via headsets. The venue is: Salle Polyvalente (just off from the main entrance),
Lycée Michel Lucius, 157 avenue Pasteur, L-2311 Luxembourg. There is free parking on site and in the teacher’s parking lot. Please see the accompanying flyer for more information and contact details for the evening.

The second parenting seminar is planned for Monday 27th April and details will be available closer to the date.

"Keeping History Alive" Evening Seminar

On Wednesday 22nd April Passage will host a unique evening seminar entitled "Keeping History Alive" with our special guest speaker, Steven Frank. Steven, a Dutch Holocaust survivor and one of only 93 children who survived the atrocities at Thereienstadt, will tell the fascinating story about his grim and harrowing experiences in the Czech concentration camp during the Second World War.

The evening will highlight the importance of speaking about and preserving these historical events in the minds of this and future generations, so valuable lessons of tolerance, restraint, courage and integrity can be learnt from the horrors of the past. Passage feel strongly that families are stronger through the bonding of intergenerational ties, so therefore parents and their secondary school-aged children are invited to share in this unmissable event.

More details on the venue and time will sent out in due course. In the meantime, if you want to learn more about Steven Frank and the project to preserve Holocaust memories, please click the link on the image below.

Aware Parenting Seminar: How to deal with kids with undesirable behaviour

Another parenting seminar to draw to your attention is happening on Saturday 14th February and repeated again on Friday 24th April. Entitled "How to deal with kids with undesirable behaviour', the workshop is run (in English) by Mariana Florea, a certified Aware Parenting instructor.

In Mariana's own words
: "the workshop intends to create awareness around the pitfalls of the discipline based on punishments and rewards and to introduce the idea of Cooperation and Democratic parenting, both far more effective in kids rearing in the long run".

Both the workshops will be held at Hotel Parc Belle-Vue, 5 Avenue Marie-Thérèse, Altrimenti Culture ASBL, L-2132 Luxemburg City, Luxembourg on the dates specified. To register your interest in the event and to learn more about the child-rearing philosophies on which Aware Parenting is based upon, please click here.

Passage Professionals Networking Evening

So far we’ve had six Passage Professionals Networking Evenings at Club 5 in Bonnevoie and they have been a great opportunity for us to meet and greet some of the Luxembourg-based practitioners and to help facilitate dialogue between them as well. Thank you again for the great response to our initiative and for sending in your valuable feedback following these evenings.

Please bear in mind that the the next Professionals Networking Evening of the season is scheduled for Thursday 12th March. If you are a professional working in the field of health, education and the social development of children and families in Luxembourg and would like to join us, then don’t hesitate to email us at passage.parents@gmail.com for an invitation.
The regular address for our fortnightly Passage meetings and occasional ‘themed discussions’ is:
239 Val des Bon Malades, L-2121 Kirchberg, Luxembourg.

Look out for the “Luxchiro” sign, then enter the building. The meetings are held in the private room downstairs.
