Dear Friends of Passage

Well it's Autumn time again and as the darker nights draw in, the memories of a blissful Summer seemed to have flitted away like the warm weather has done recently. However it's not all gloom and doom, school routines and homework schedules to contend with... there will be a few ‘save the dates’ coming up that may make your life as a parent a little easier!

But first, a quick review of the academic year just gone, saw a wide range of accessible parenting seminars from the various schools in the Grand Duchy for the English-speaking community to attend. Passage ourselves were honoured again to have the venerable Holocaust survivor Steven Frank join us for another one of our “Keeping History Alive” evening seminars. The audience was a wonderful mix covering the gamut of ages and nationalities, who were there to hear first-hand, Steven's harrowing, yet fascinating account of his young life during the Second World War.

What was most rewarding were the many secondary school-aged children that approached Steven afterwards, who were simply awestruck and wanted to engage some more. There was a unanimous consensus among the children that Steven's story deserved and most importantly needed to be heard by the younger generation, in order to connect with the past, so we learn lessons for the future. Passage would certainly love to plan another outing for Steven again in the next year if his busy schedule allows, so hopefully it's just a case of ‘watch this space’.

As always the weather in Luxembourg was unpredictable and put paid to many a planned event over the early Summer months. Unfortunately one of the casualties was our first Passage ‘Ohana’ Family Picnic, that was sadly cancelled at the last minute due to the onset of rain. It was doubly disappointing as our “Cloud Tales” theme would have been rather apt if only the clouds present that day, weren't inclement weather ones! Nevertheless, we hope to revive this concept again one day in the Summer next year.

Looking forward to the future, you will notice that we are introducing a new course in Spring 2017, called “Time Out for Parents”. This six-week workshop aims to encourage, enhance and build confidence in your parenting skills and was designed by Positive Parenting in the UK. Course registration is already open and don't forget to take advantage of our promotional price if you book a place before the end of November 2016.

In the meantime, Passage are still holding monthly parent support group meetings in Kirchberg, if you want to join us to speak confidentially on any issues.

Admittedly we have been slower to kick-off the Networking activities this term for the professionals and practitioners among you, but the upcoming evening we have planned for Thursday 27th October, will hopefully make amends for the lethargic start. As always, the objective during these events is to offer a compelling array of topics to discuss, information share and peer support, but above all a relaxing evening for all those who participate.

Wishing you all a vibrant start to the Autumn and we look forward to reconnecting with some good friends again soon.

Parenting Seminar at the International School of Luxembourg (ISL)

Tuesday 18th October, starts 6.45pm
Compassionate Communication

Guest Speaker: Ranka Šarenac, Psychologist

Parenting can be so rewarding but so challenging too. Our guest presenter will talk about non-violent communication (open communication) and how it applies to both our family and school life through the perspective of the parent, the child and the teacher. The benefits of differentiating our observations from evaluations, of identifying feelings and needs underpinning our actions, and connecting in taking positive actions with your child.

Ranka brings a wealth of knowledge in working with parents and schools throughout Europe and would like to share this with you on the evening. Online registration is still open for this worthwhile parenting seminar; please click here to reserve your place.

For further information please contact Lou Gervais (ISL Upper School Counsellor) on 2604 4205 or email lgervais@islux.lu

Passage Professionals Networking Evening on Thursday 27th October

The Passage Professionals Network meets every 6 weeks at Bosso Brasserie for a relaxed and informal evening of discussion, information sharing and social networking.

These events are generally organized around one or two presentations by practitioners, or a discussion concerning the challenges of working and supporting families in Luxembourg. For our upcoming event, we are delighted to welcome our special guest speaker Sophie Le Dorner (Mindmatters Hub), who has generously offered to talk about “Brainwise”; a practical method to build emotional, social and cognitive skills in children and parents.

If you are a professional working in the field of health, education and the social development of children and families in Luxembourg and would like to join us, then don’t hesitate to email us at info@passage.lu for a personal invitation and be included on our networking list.

The regular address for our monthly Passage parent support group meetings is:
239 Val des Bon Malades, L-2121 Kirchberg, Luxembourg.

Look out for the “Luxchiro” sign, then enter the building. The meetings are held in a confidential space in the private room downstairs.
