Dear Friends of Passage

Happy New Year to you and we hope your start to 2016 has been a positive experience so far. Passage have returned with renewed energy and enthusiasm for the year ahead.

Sadly along the way, we have had a to say a fond farewell to one of our Passage team members, Björn Callmar, whose two year sabbatical from his work as a Youth Coordinator in Sweden ended in December. While in Luxembourg, Björn took up the reins of our Professionals Networking group and was instrumental in driving the group forward and for creating a diverse schedule full of interesting topics and discussion. He returns to snowy Sweden to a new job and many more new adventures and responsibilities. We want to thank him for all his hard work and infinite kindness and likewise wish him lots of good fortune in his new endeavours.

In Björn's wake, we would like to welcome and introduce you to the newest member of our Passage team of volunteers, Melissa Elenes. Melissa, who has lived in Luxembourg for eight years, originally hails from rural Western United States and has a background in Teaching and Special Education. Many of you may already know her as a mother of four young children and with her personal experience and professional credentials, she will be a very welcome and valuable addition to the Passage team.

Learn more about Björn and Melissa from their self-penned articles on "Domestic Dads" and "Parent Advocacy" respectively.

Finally may we remind you to check out our Passage website, as we regularly update with relevant blog articles, useful information and topical news. The website will be officially a year old in March and we hope it continues to be a pertinent 'living resource' for the English-speaking community in Luxembourg. There is always room for improvement however, so please forward any suggestions or articles that you may wish to share by emailing us at passage.parents@gmail.com.

So without further ado, here are some useful dates coming up...

Parenting Seminars at Lycée Michel Lucius

The benefits and risks of using the internet for our children

Presented by: Mr John Kaufmann, ICT teacher
The internet is a blessing and a curse at the same time. It is a blessing because it is a good place to find useful information for school and for social activities. Yet, it is a curse as it can also be a big time waster and a place where students are confronted with things that they are not ready for. This parenting conference will cover the topic of how we can get the students to use the benefits of the internet while at the same time protecting them from the negative sides.

Guest Speaker Steven Frank to return to Luxembourg in 2016

Great news for all those who missed Steven Frank’s most moving and awe-inspiring talk last year documenting his survival of the Thereienstadt Concentration Camp during the Second World War. Passage are pleased to announce that Steven will be making another appearance in Luxembourg in 2016 and we are incredibly honoured to have him again as our special guest at an upcoming “Keeping History Alive” seminar in the Summer.

We are currently in the process of organising the event and in order to gauge the level of interest and to help us determine the venue size, please email Passage if you would like to reserve a place for the seminar. Unfortunately at the moment the precise date is yet to be confirmed, but early indications are that it will be some time at the beginning of June. Meanwhile, if you are intrigued to learn more, please see our Passage Youtube channel to view the video taken from his last visit.

Advance Notice of a NEW Passage Parenting Course
for the Autumn

During the Spring, Passage will be holding a "Talking to your children about growing up" course. This is a 6-week SRE (Sex and Relationships Education) course with a pilot group of parents only. If successful, we hope to expand and roll this concept out into a "Time Out for Parents" course in the Autumn of 2016.

The ‘Time Out’ course is designed to give parents the opportunity to build stronger relationships with their children whatever the age. We start this journey by exploring what children really need at each developmental stage, practicing positive parenting skills and sharing ideas with other parents. We examine the vital subject of setting boundaries – why children need them, why they can be hard to set and carry through, and how our parenting style affects our children’s response. We recognise the value of routines, praise and consistency, and explore a toolkit of discipline strategies for different ages and different issues. The topics of unsupervised play, TV and internet safety, bullying and talking about sex are tackled next. In the final session, there’s a chance to review the course and practice using problem-solving skills. This course is targeted at any parent who did not receive a ‘how it works’ instruction manual with their baby at birth.

The "Time Out for Parents" course was designed by Care for the Family (UK) and will be led by Lynn Frank, a licensed facilitator and Passage coordinator. It takes place over 6 sessions starting in late September 2016. If you would like to reserve an early place on the course or if you simply want to learn more, then please contact us at: passage.parents@gmail.com.

The regular address for our monthly Passage parent support group meetings is:
239 Val des Bon Malades, L-2121 Kirchberg, Luxembourg.

Look out for the “Luxchiro” sign, then enter the building. The meetings are held in a confidential space in the private room downstairs.
