Novato’s Middle School and High School “Newcomer” Students Receive a Warm Welcome from NMCS
The Middle School and High School years can be tough to navigate, but teens new to America face exceptional challenges. NMCS is partnered with Novato Unified School District to provide support and services to these children through the Newcomer Group. Our bi-lingual, trauma-informed case managers note that many newcomer teens are incredibly hardworking, resilient and responsible beyond their years—some have jobs and help pay the rent and some are here without their parents or siblings.
The Newcomer Group offers a six-week social-emotional curriculum for all teen newcomers. Our case managers also meet with individuals throughout the year and connect teens to supports they (and their families) may need, such as our Novato Teen Clinic, mental health care, the Weekly Food Pantry, emergency rental assistance and more. Case managers may also connect teens to Marin’s Children and Family Services and Family & Children’s Law Center. Last year NMCS welcomed and supported 73 newcomer teens. Below is a quote from a grateful teen:
“Thank you for helping us learn more about the good and bad things and your online class is so much fun and thank you for the raffles and everything.”
