Welcome to our spring newsletter

We've got plenty to share, but we’d love to hear from you too – If you have any thoughts on what you’d like to hear more about, Let us know!

Making a Difference

Our Sustainable Development Fund supports projects that benefit the landscape, people, wildlife and economy of the AONB; so far we have funded projects with a total value in excess of £2,600,000.

This financial year, we are thrilled to have secured a further £20,000 for new grants, and applications are NOW OPEN to local initiatives looking to make a positive social, economic and/or environmental impact.

Do you have a project in mind that
could benefit from our support?

Enhancing the Farmed Landscape

The conservation of our landscape and wildlife depends on many factors, but
two very important elements are an understanding of key environmental issues and the motivation to address them.

With the aim of developing knowledge and encouraging co-operative working to benefit the landscape, the AONB have been instrumental in establishing the newly formed East Devon Farmers Group.

The group has now run several key training sessions for its 53 members, which have included a manure management course and a ‘getting value from your hedgerows’ day.

Bats in Your Neighbourhood?

As part of the Devon Bat Survey 2017, the Devon Greater Horseshoe Bat Project is making bat detectors available so that bats can be recorded in local areas.

The aim of the project, partnered by the AONB, is to build a clearer picture of where the 17 species of British Bat can be found and use the information gathered to support the protection of one of Devon’s rarest animals. Could you help?

The detectors are currently available for collection from Beer, Honiton & Otterton.

Legacy to Landscape

The Legacy to Landscape Project is
entering into its second year and in the last few months we've developed historical aspects of the project by visiting the
Devon Heritage Centre, learning how to access the archived maps and documents, and supporting volunteers in attending a Palaeography Course, so that they could learn to read some of the older documents.

For 2017 we've produced a brand new events guide. There's a real mix of activities so it's well worth a look.

King Johns Oak, our 800 year old oak tree, unfortunately did not win the Woodland Trust Tree of the Year competition. It DID however get enough votes to win a £500 Care Package from the Peoples Postcode Lottery!  The AONB has matched this fund to help with the tree’s continued survival.

Get Devon Buzzing!

Natural Devon’s ‘Get Devon Buzzing’ is all about raising awareness for the importance of pollinators like bees, wasps, hoverflies and butterflies, and taking positive action to conserve them.

Build an amazing bug hotel to help Devon pollinators and win some great prizes!

The Bee's Needs

Pollinators in the UK, including bumblebees, solitary bees and butterflies, are under threat and in decline. This is a significant concern as pollinators are crucial for both food security and the maintenance of biodiversity in our natural environment.

The Bee’s Needs is our next event in the AONB Partnership calendar and aims to raise awareness of the issues, as identified in the National Pollinator Strategy, and unify local interest, skills, experience and enthusiasm to help inform pollinator strategies at a local level. Ambassadors
are also welcome to attend.

The event will be held on Tuesday 11th July at Blackbury Honey Farm and include presentations from the Bumble Bee Conservation Trust and  Devon Wildlife Trust. For further details please register your interest
