Newsletter 2014/3

Message from the President
We are very happy to announce that the year of our 5th anniversary started well. We had already very interesting activities and events, including the WIA-Europe presence at ILA in Berlin. We are also planning breakthrough initiatives at the upcoming International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Toronto, which will take place from September 29th until October 3rd and of which you will be informed soon.
The 2014 strategic plan has been discussed and finalized, and it shall be discussed and approved at the upcoming General Assembly, to be held at the ESA/ESTEC premises on September 8th.

It has been decided as a standard procedure to hold the awards ceremony each year during the IAF spring week in Paris. Please consider it when making your plans.

This newsletter is full of information about our recent achievements and successes.  Enjoy reading it!

WIA-Europe's 5th anniversary

The 65th International Astronautical Congress (IAC)  in Toronto, Canada, will provide the perfect stage for celebrating five years of WIA-Europe. From Sept. 29 – Oct. 3, a series of events initiated by WIA-Europe and organized in close cooperation with WIA and WIA-Canada will offer multiple opportunities for outreach and networking.

On the occasion of this IAC, WIA leaders from the US, Canada and Europe will have their first trilateral meeting to discuss strategies and possible joint activities.
Mark your calendars especially for the traditional IAF/WIA-Europe Networking Breakfast on Wednesday, Oct. 1. We are delighted that Sandra Magnus, former NASA astronaut and  AIAA Executive Director, and Michael Menking, European Director for Earth Observation, Navigation and Science at Airbus DS, are our keynote speakers! Meet WIA leaders from the US, Canada and Europe there and use this opportunity to enlarge your personal network.

Panel discussions in the Global Networking Forum and an IAC Plenary complement the WIA activities at the IAC, gathering female leaders representing space science, industry and agencies as well as intergovernmental organizations from Canada, USA, Africa, Asia and Europe. More details on the events will be announced in time before the IAC.

WIA-Europe Awards are open for nominations

WIA-Europe would like to recognise the achievements of outstanding individuals in aerospace and upcoming talents - young professionals and students alike - and for this we set up our awards programme.

Participation in the event demonstrates your commitment to WIA-Europe's mission: to expand women's opportunities for leadership and increase their visibility in the aerospace community. The 2014 award ceremony will be held in the frame of the following IAF spring meetings in Paris in March 2015.

A call for 2014 nominees is now out: please send in your nominations and applications. The deadline for this year is September 30th 2014.

You need to be a Women In Aerospace Europe member to be eligible for Student and Young Professional award. The nominees for the Outstanding Achievement Award do not need to be WIA-Europe members. The programme is open to both genders. Read more about the award applications here.

Panel Discussion at the Berlin Air Show ILA

On May 22nd 2014, almost 5 years after its creation, WIA-Europe held a panel discussion at the Berlin Air Show ILA, at the stand of the "Wirtschaftsförderung Bremen". The participants were Simonetta di Pippo, Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs and President of WIA-Europe, Jean-Yves Le Gall, President of the French Space Agency CNES, Johannes von Thadden, Senior Vice President at Airbus Defence & Space and Brigitte Zypries, Secretary of state in the German Ministry of Economics and German Coordinator for Aerospace. The discussion, moderated by Claudia Kessler, CEO of HE Space Operations and Chair of the Board of WIA-Europe, involved the status quo of women in the aerospace field today and the perpectives for a more female leadership in the aerospace community in the future. The panelists agreed that one major key to advancing careers for young women is building a strong network and Ms. Zypries confirmed that the draft law for the gender equality in the supervisory boards of large enterprises, as agreed in the German coalition treaty, is on its way. Equivalent laws are already in place in France and Italy, the home countries of panelists di Pippo and Le Gall.
Launch of WIA-Europe Local Group Cologne

On July 1st, our 7th local group has been launched in Cologne. WIA-Europe Chair of the Board Claudia Kessler held a speech about '5 years of WIA-Europe'. Approximately 16 people attended the launch event.

After the launch, the attendees were invited by DLR to participate in the Porzer Picknick.
Valentina's Space Night 2014 in Bremen
This year marks the 51st anniversary of the first woman in space. On June 16th 1963 Cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova took off with the spacecraft Vostok 6 on her three day voyage to space. During this trip she rounded the earth more than 50 times.
The Valentina's Space Night event initiated by WIA-Europe took place on Tuesday 17th June in Bremen. Held at the Beluga Bar the networking event brought together women and men from the aerospace industry and academia. Next to networking, the group enjoyed some cocktails whilst watching the World Cup match Belgium vs. Algeria. A special thanks goes to Elina Poikane (designelina.com) for designing our poster, to Patricia Netzlaf (WIA Bremen Local Group Leader) as well as Christina Scholz and Anika Otten for organizing the successful evening and we already look forward to Valentina's Space Night in 2015!
Welcome to our new corporate members SES and ESA!

Joining our network to promote opportunities for women in the aerospace sector are SES at the platinum level and ESA at the silver level. Welcome among our corporate membership!
