Message from the Chair of the Board
It feels like yesterday that Simonetta di Pippo and I met and created the idea of starting WIA-Europe, but it’s already 5 years ago. At that time it felt to us as if we were filling a void, new members just kept applying almost every day, and still WIA-Europe is growing more and more. Today WIA-Europe is an organization that is well established in all European space networks as well as on trans-European level with its sister organisations in Canada and the US. Our ultimate goal is to create a worldwide network in the near future.
WIA-Europe has moved a lot, we are supported by most of the European space organisations and many companies, we have more than 350 individual members and six local groups across Europe, we have awarded 11 grants and 5 awards, and we continue to connect women in the aerospace world.
But there is still a lot to achieve for WIA Europe: All Director General, Presidents, etc. of European space agencies are 100 % male (the same is true worldwide by the way) , the percentage of female ESA directors is less than 10%, and female leaders in the aerospace industry are hardly to be seen.
The goal of WIA-Europe is to increase the number of women in leadership positions as least to a visible number. The board of WIA-Europe will therefore meet again end of May to work together on a strategic plan on how to achieve this goal.
5 Years of WIA-Europe are a reason to celebrate, and I hope when we will celebrate 10 years of WIA-Europe, we can do that even with a significant number of women in leadership positions in the European aerospace community.

Claudia Kessler, Chair of the Board of WIA-Europe

WIA Europe is associated partner of the project Space Girls, Space Women developed by SIPA press

SIPA press, one of the world's main photojournalism agencies and corporate member of WIA-Europe, is launching a major project dedicated to space exploration from women’s perspectives called Space Girls, Space Women. This provides a new photographic odyssey about three generations of “space” women: girls, students and professionals. The project aims to bring a new perspective to science, technology and innovation through space.

“We” says Simonetta di Pippo, President of WIA-E “accepted last January to be an associated member of Space Girls, Space Women because this project is perfectly in line with our final goal : To develop a society in which diversity will not be noticed anymore and to advocate the importance of aerospace activities at the same time”.
