Religious institutions, particularly Hindu temples, have recently been the focus of several landmark Supreme Court cases. In this talk, legal anthropologist Deepa Das Acevedo will discuss the Court’s opinions concerning the Sabarimala temple (IYLA v. State of Kerala) and the Padmanabhaswamy temple (Marthanda Varma v. State of Kerala). Drawing on her longstanding ethnographic and legal research, as well as the material for her book project (The Battle for Sabarimala, OUP forthcoming), Professor Das Acevedo will contextualize the disputes and explain their significance for religion-state relations and democratic governance in India. Professor Kalantry, Faculty Director of the Cornell India Law Center, will moderate the talk.
