Training Workshop:

Solving Fan Vibration Problems by First Understanding
Fan Selection, Control and Maintenance Fundamentals
May 27, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Description:

Properly running fans are very important to the successful operation of any facility. When dealing with any type of vibration problem, it is highly beneficial (and in some cases, crucial) that the analyst has a good technical understanding of the equipment they are troubleshooting. This is certainly the case with fans where the cause of a vibration problem may have its roots in the wrong selection of equipment or incompatibility with the application.

This workshop provides attendees with practical information to aid operators, engineers and maintenance staff with decisions they may face concerning the selection, operation and maintenance of their fans and how to keep them running as smoothly as possible. During the day, the following topical areas will be covered:
  • Fundamentals of fans and the principles of interaction with other process and system components
  • How fan performance and system curves are developed
  • Fan selection and application principles
  • Fan control strategies and measures that improve fan efficiency
  • Proper maintenance practices
  • Mechanical and aerodynamic fan vibration problems and the type of remedial measures that should be implemented.
A working fan model complete with variable frequency drive and system components will be used to demonstrate the principles that will be taught during the day. A group tour of a local fan balancing facility is also included as part of this workshop event.

Vern Martin of FLOWCARE Engineering Inc. will be the workshop facilitator and lead instructor. Additional FLOWCARE engineers will assist Vern in presenting various workshop components throughout the day.

Biosketch - Vern Martin, P.Eng.
Vern is a senior mechanical engineer and a partner in FLOWCARE Engineering Inc.; a company that specializes in fan and blower technical consulting services. He is a graduate from the University of Waterloo Mechanical Engineering Department in 1978.
Prior to his employment at FLOWCARE, Vern engineered, tested and conducted field troubleshooting of fans for Sheldons Engineering; a manufacturer of both commercial and heavy-duty industrial fans. At FLOWCARE, Vern has primarily been involved in energy optimization studies and the troubleshooting of large fans with performance, noise, vibration, control or failure problems.
Registration for the Training Workshop:
Early bird registration by April 1st: $195 for CMVA members, $295 for non-members
After April 1st: $295 for CMVA members, $355 for non-members

Call to Vendors / Exhibitors

This year’s Ontario Chapter AGM will have space for a maximum of 14 Vendor Exhibits and some exciting sponsorship opportunities.

All the Exhibitor tables will be in the same room as the presentations, lunch, and breaks. Vendors are welcome to set up prior to the evening social that follows the Day 1 workshop. Vendors are encouraged to attend the social (with active or inactive table tops) in order to meet and converse with the attendees. On Day 2, there will also be plenty of opportunities to meet with the attendees before and after the presentations and during the breaks and at lunchtime.

We have two sponsorship opportunities for 2014.

The first is for a “Longest Drive” competition in the hosting facilities “19th Hole” golf simulator (to take place during the evening social after the Day 1 Workshop) and the second will be a general raffle (prize to be determined) during Day 2 of the AGM. Addition sponsorships may be available if the interest exists (i.e. “closest to the pin”, etc). Any other suggestions for Exhibitor participation are welcome.
