The 171st Corps of Cadets participated in a Patriot Day ceremony to honor those lost during the 9/11 terrorists attacks and those who died attempting to rescue the people trapped in the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. ORMA’s current Cadets were not born in 2001 and did not know the significance of Patriot Day. We were honored to have the Oak Ridge and Stokesdale Fire Departments join us for the ceremony. They represented all of the first responders that put themselves in dangerous and traumatic situations to ensure the safety and well-being of the citizens. We are grateful for their selfless service to the community.
Patriot Day (9/11) was established on December 18, 2001 by a joint resolution of Congress. The resolution calls for all U.S. flags to be flown at half-staff. It further requests Americans to honor those that perished in the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and those brave souls on United Airlines Flight 93 with a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 AM.
Many of us will remember where we were when we found out this attack was happening. As a nation, we were glued to news programs listening for any shred of information to explain what was happening. Those attacks impacted the domestic and foreign policy at the time and many of those changes are still in effect today.
