Dear <<First Name>>,

I’m sure that’s it’s been an unusual year for all of us. As we speed towards the end of another year, we want to step back and say a big thank you to God for sustaining us and causing our work to grow from strength to strength – despite the difficulties that the pandemic has brought. We also want to thank our supporters for standing with us in prayer and support, because without faithful supporters like you, we could not continue the work we’re involved in, work that is providing Scriptures in 170 different languages.

God bless, Barry and Julia

Sena Bibles for Christmas

The Word for the World UK and USA partnered together to buy 5000 Sena Bibles, which are now awaiting distribution. The last distribution which took place for the Sena people of Malawi was 2008, 13 years ago! The Sena Bible, the first Bible translated by The Word for the World, was published in 2006.

Floods and famines have come and gone in the area, and Sena Bibles are no longer readily available to the people. The good news is that a distribution is planned from the 10th to the 22nd of December, just in time for Christmas!

The 5000 Sena Bibles will be transported from Blantyre to Nsanje and given to churches, pastors and the 200 literacy centres throughout the Sena speaking area. The hunger for God's Word will be satisfied for many families.
This pastor handcycled 50km to take his box of Sena Bibles back to his church members at our first distribution of Sena Bibles. Hunger for God's Word is great!

Please join us in praise:

  • Praise God the 5000 Sena Bibles arrived in Malawi in time to be distributed before Christmas. Pray for the Bibles to reach the remote villages in the Sena area soon.
  • We rejoice that the ETEN  conference with 11 Bible Agencies attending went well. We are grateful for new partnerships being made and the increased profile that TWFTW is enjoying as we shared our successes in group checking in our cluster projects.
  • From May until the end of November, 190 translators in 1ndia, Kenya, Malawi, Myanmar, Nigeria, Sudan, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe started or continued their training – some online, some face-to-face.
  • Praise God for our 28 full-time consultants and 33 consultants-in-training, which Barry continues to mentor and oversee.

We wish you and your family a blessed Christmas and a very happy New Year!

Bible translation conference in USA

Barry Funnell was asked to attend a conference in the USA in November held by Every Tribe Every Nation (ETEN). This is a collaboration of the 11 major Bible translation organisations worldwide. Barry presented The Word for the World's innovative approach of group consultant checking, which he has spearheaded for several years now.

He was able to travel with Julia and was excited to be at the conference where TWFTW had 6 delegates among the approximately 300 people who attended. The USA opened its borders to travel from the UK on the day the conference started, so Barry attended day 2 to 4. The emphasis of the conference was to do Bible translation better, faster and cheaper for the remaining 4000 languages without Scripture.

It was great to network with other Bible agencies, to encourage others with the successes that God has given us in TWFTW, and to learn from others too. Oral Bible translation is an area we all need to explore further to speed up getting God's Word to the many unreached groups who are largely illiterate.
When will the remaining 4000 unreached people groups hear the Good News?

Please pray with us:

  • Pray for our UK Director, Steve, as he engages churches and individuals with our vision of translating God's Word into 500 languages by 2050. Pray for your church to get behind the vision too.
  • Pray for our new Europe Director, Pierre, as he starts 5 new projects in a cluster of Romani languages in Serbia and Croatia. These languages have completed a pilot project to have the Gospel of Luke translated, but need further training and help to complete the entire Bible in their languages. Our training materials are being translated into Serbian for the work to start in April. Three of the five teams have translators ready for the training, but two are still seeking the right people to join.
  • Please pray for Kobus, the CEO of TWFTW, who is planning to move from South Africa with his family to the USA in the new year. Pray that the Covid situation and visa requirements will not cause delays. He is needed to help with fund raising and partnership development with donors in the USA to help fund our growing number of Bible translation projects - 170 now. Pray for our need to build capacity under Kobus' leadership, for our vision of completing the translation of the Bible for 500 language groups by 2050.
