Dear SFSU Cinema Community:

I send you my warmest wishes for health and safety in the face of this pandemic. I am working with the administration, faculty and staff across physical distance to maintain the spirit of creativity and sense of community that are emblems of our School. I am grateful to all the students for their striving and working hard during this challenging period unlike any other we have endured together.

The graduating seniors and graduate students of the Class of 2020 are especially on my mind and in my heart. I entered SFSU in 2016 along with many of you and we are closing out your years with us in this wrenching time. Scholarships and Awards in the School of Cinema are due April 28. These opportunities are located at the bottom of this newsletter. Please apply!

Movies, podcasts, IG live shows, Zoom dance parties, and new ways of connecting online are helping many people right now. “Long-Distance Radio” expands my world: https://www.longdistanceradio.com/15-racism-time-coronavirus. And the newly released Netflix series Self-Made https://www.netflix.com/title/80202462 inspired by the story of Madam C.J. Walker, executive produced and co-written by a member of the Women of Color Film Collective at Cal in the 90s, is giving me hope. Please share any work keeping you strong via our Facebook or Instagram. It is my hope that our craft of cinema is helping us to dig deep, find peace, and gain the resolve we need to get through!

School of Cinema Response to COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 public health emergency is an unprecedented public health crisis. As the School of Cinema, we are unable to collaborate face-to-face, nor ambition to complete our work in the way we planned. The priority now is to prevent its spread and to ensure the safety of our faculty, staff, and students.

Faculty are revising and rethinking syllabi so that learning outcomes are met for students to complete courses and seniors to graduate. Students are not supposed to collaborate in person because prolonged face-to-face interaction within close proximity leads to the spread of the virus. Faculty and staff meetings are via Zoom until further notice. The list of remote office hours for faculty will be posted on our website and on campus by Monday, March 16, when the campus puts its classes online. Students will be able to access advising online, via email appointments, iLearn, or Zoom links.

To protect public safety, the facilities of the School of Cinema will be closed beginning March 16. This includes the Equipment Room, Labs, and Sound Stage. To be clear, classes are not able to check out equipment nor access computers in our studios, computer labs, editing suites, equipment room, nor shoot in our stage, as we cannot guarantee effective social distancing and effective cleaning of all equipment and surfaces between each usage. Staff are not to grant access to these spaces; doing so may enable faster spread of COVD-19. Staff will be available via email and phone during normal work hours to support instructional continuity and School operations.

Together, we must galvanize our creativity to accomplish our educational mission and to ensure student graduation. Currently, faculty are working with students under reimagined syllabi as we confront this pandemic. They are ready to accommodate students in various situations and have advocated for their needs.

For students without computers or internet access, the library is open and has 12 computers which support Premiere. They also have laptops for 4-hour check-out though these are not equipped with Premiere. If students are still unable to solve their lack of internet and computers with these resources, faculty will work with them to postpone work or secure incomplete grades.

Thank you for your patience, hard work, and innovation during this exceptional crisis. Please stay alert to any changes to these polices that may be announced due to rapidly occurring developments. Please be well and take good care in these uncertain times.

CINE 616 VIA ZOOM

Our last class meeting via Zoom for CINE 616 Immersive Storytelling. I found that the students adapted quickly to this virtual class meeting platform. The virtual teaching and learning platform indeed limited our face to face interaction, but it in a way stimulates some creative ideas for thinking out of the box. I'm looking forward to seeing the ideas of our first project "Imagining Home". ALUMNUS CAULEEN SMITH AT SFMOMA

We are pleased to announce that on April 2nd SFMOMA begins a limited series Gathering Materials, which presents three distinct programs that focus on experimental moving image works and artist-made film and videos that use time and place as a guide to discover untold stories, forge connections across generations and geography, and map paths to ancestors and possible futures, if not utopias. The program is influenced and inspired by two exhibitions on view: the intimate portraiture and street photography of Dawoud Bey and the historical investigations of Cauleen Smith.

On May 21st, the Los Angeles–based artist and filmmaker Cauleen Smith will present the audiovisual performance Black Utopia LP: a cauleen smith movie (2012), which synthesizes her extensive research on Afrofuturism and the innovative American jazz composer and musician Sun Ra (1914–93). This program is free and open to the public, RSVP encouraged.

THE BLACK FILM CLUB MISSION STATEMENT UPDATE

The Black Film Club is an SFSU student organization committed to expanding the visibility of black-oriented films and filmmakers at SF State. We do so by workshopping and supporting student film projects in any state of production that depict black experiences and/or thematically draw upon black perspectives. Furthermore, we educate our members about the existing contributions of black film professionals - contemporary and historic - to the varied disciplines of the cinematic art form.

FEMINIST FILMMAKER FELLOWSHIP

The newly founded Feminist Filmmaker Fellowship is here to provide equitable opportunities for disenfranchised filmmakers from SFSU and stand in solidarity with other organizations fighting the same cause.

Our objective is to CREATE a space for opportunity, CELEBRATE female and non-binary works, CONNECT with the industry, and build a sense of COMMUNITY with one another.

Our goals for the club include getting equipment for members’ use, creating in-club films, hosting festivals and screenings, building a support team on and off campus, and more.

Images, whether static or moving, have often been seen as alluring for viewers, evincing a power to attract and fascinate. Cinema, photography, and other image-based media depend on ideas of allure to draw us to certain films, to certain stars, to moments or images that somehow capture our attention. Allure overlaps with notions of visual attraction, with startling or haunting imagery, with an eroticism that is often as much visceral as visual. Yet, at the same time, allure never seems entirely separate from the idea of the lure, with its suggestion that viewers might somehow be caught by a mysterious attraction from which they cannot escape. Can allure ever be entirely separated from spectacle and the exotic? What is the relation of gender and sexuality to ideas of allure? How is allure related to fetishism, including commodity fetishism? How do we explain the appeal that the trainwreck, the horrific, and the grotesque exert for us? Or our inability to turn away from the addictive allures of pop culture, games, or social media?

LCA SCHOLARSHIPS 2020-21

MARKOWSKI-LEACH SCHOLARSHIP
Applications now being accepted for the Markowski-Leach Scholarship for the 2020-21 academic year. The scholarship is intended for LGBTQ students at Stanford University, San Francisco State University, University of California Berkeley, UC Hastings School of Law, and University of California San Francisco. The award is $2,000 per year for two years of elibility before reapplication is necessary. The application deadline is April 5, 2020.

JEROLD ROSENBERG FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP
The Jerold Rosenberg Family Scholarship provides financial assistance (the equivalent to full-time tuition), with the possibility of extension for up to 3 years, to full-time students who may not have yet attained their potential due to financial or personal circumstances.

Criteria:

Undergraduate student completing their freshman year (in spring 2020) with a major or minor in LCA
Full-time enrollment
Cumulative GPA between 2.5 and 3.33
A statement of financial need, education goals, and life goals.
Recommendation letter from one reference

A complete list of criteria and application requirements is available online. Applications are submitted through AcademicWorks beginning January 15^th and due by April 1^st 11:59 pm.

IMPORTANT APPLICATION INFORMATION: All LCA scholarships require one or more reference letters as a part of the application. All reference letters must be received, via AcademicWorks, no later than the application deadline in order for an application to be considered qualified and reviewed. This requires applicants to submit their application before the deadline, which includes providing the reference name and email address. References should be notified by the applicant that letters need to be submitted through AcademicWorks no later than a week before the application deadline, to allow time to solve any potential issues. Applicants should check their AcademicWorks student portal to ensure that reference letters have been submitted before the application deadline, resending reference letter requests for letters not submitted. Applications that do not have the required reference letter by the deadline will not be reviewed and are not eligible for the scholarship.

NASA CINESPACE SHORT FILM COMPETITION

Most of us will never travel to space, but through imagination and NASA's extensive photo and video archives, we CAN experience the wonder of the universe for ourselves.

I am reaching out to let you and your students know about the 2020 NASA CineSpace Short Film Competition. Sponsored by NASA and the Houston Cinema Arts Film Festival, this annual competition challenges filmmakers worldwide to create an original film (10 minutes or less) utilizing NASA's archival footage.

We'd love to invite your students to participate! Here are the key things to know:

Anyone age 18 and older can participate
Films can be about ANYTHING, but must include at least 10% (based on the video’s total running time, not including credits) of actual NASA footage provided by NASA
Special guest judge Richard Linklater (Boyhood, Dazed & Confused) will help determine the winning short films
Finalist films will screen at the Houston Cinema Arts Festival in November 2020, and other selected screenings/film festivals across the country, as well as on NASA TV and even the International Space Station
In addition to the screenings, a total of $26,000 in cash prizes will be distributed to the top five films
Submissions are accepted now through July 15, 2020
