Southwind Garden Club Members at Chucalissa this past week include (left to right) Beth Jennings, Rebecca Perisho, Marianne Parrs, Mary Conley, and Katie Hamberlin.
For the past 10 years the Southwind Garden Club has made many outstanding contributions to the C.H. Nash Museum and the Chucalissa site. One of the contributions includes the seasonal planting in the front of our museum. This past Thursday the Club completed their Spring planting of color that greets visitors as they enter our site complex.
Another extremely important contribution the club made is coordinating the state certified arboretum along the Chucalissa nature trail. Established through the Club's work in 2008, and re-certified in 2012, the Arboretum is an important part of the educational and aesthetic environment of the Chucalissa site. In conversation with the Club members this past Thursday, we have set a goal to identify an additional 30 species along the Chucalissa and T.O. Fuller Park trails to achieve a Level 2 Arboretum upgrade.
We thank the Southwind Garden Club for their continued and longstanding support that exemplifies the volunteer spirit so crucial to Chucalissa's success.
Expanded Summer Schedule for Family Days
From June 1 through August 15 we offer an expanded schedule of family day activities. For the price of regular Museum admission, every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., visiting families experience the same learning and interactive opportunities provided to visiting school groups. Families take a tour of the Museum, throw darts with an atlatl, conduct a Scavenger Hunt in our Main Hall, tour our Hands-on Archaeology Lab, participate in a special fun and educational program and create a craft to take home.
The Family Program and Craft Activity change each week. For a detailed description of programs and crafts, please see our online brochure. Here is our upcoming schedule:

Volunteer Day this Saturday, May 16, 9 am - 1 pm
Join us this Saturday, May 16, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM for our monthly Volunteer Day at the C.H. Nash Museum at Chucalissa. This month we will focus on two projects.
Inventory Chucalissa Site Artifacts
We are now moving into our next phase of collection tasks with the re-inventory of all artifacts excavated over the past 50 years from the Chucalissa site. When working with the Chucalissa site artifacts, we know the precise location at the site where the artifact was excavated from - and can walk to that very location. We invite you to be a part of this exciting process.
Help Plant and Maintain our Gardens
This coming Saturday volunteers will help plant our Three Sisters and Urban Gardens and perform weeding and other maintenance work at other garden locations.
Please drop by for the entire morning or just an hour to participate in your choice of indoor or outdoor activities. No experience or sign up is necessary. Children are most welcome with adult supervision.
If you have specific volunteer interests, we are very interested in working with you on an individual basis. Please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Melissa Buchner, and she will be glad to discuss long term and/or individualized projects with you. Melissa can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org or (901) 785-3160 extension 12.
We truly appreciate our volunteers and look forward to seeing you!
