Announcing Spring Family Fun Day

Saturday, April 19: Celebrate Earth Day with Fun Outdoor Activities!

Join us on Saturday, April 19 from 9am to 2pm for our Spring Family Fun Day! In the spirit of upcoming Earth Day and its theme of sound environmental practices, we have planned a fun-filled day of outdoor activities at the Chucalissa mound complex!

Spring Family Fun Day Agenda

9:00am-10:00am
Ethnobotany Spring Hike: Join Carrie Havrilla, our Green Fee Intern, on Chucalissa's Half-Mile Nature Trail for an educational outdoor hike! She will discuss contemporary flora and fauna found at Chucalissa and springtime ecology through a historical lens. Appropriate for all ages.

10:00am-1:00pm
Three Sisters History and Family Planting Event: Please join us for a spring planting activity at our Three Sisters Garden. We will provide an overview of the history of the Three Sisters in Native American culture (corn, beans and squash), and then we'll get to work! We will have rakes, shovels and gloves on hand, but if you have a favorite pair of gloves at home that you prefer, feel free to bring them.

1:00pm-2:00pm
Ethnobotany Spring Hike: If you didn't make the morning hike, please join Carrie Havrilla, our Green Fee Intern, on Chucalissa's Half-Mile Nature Trail for an educational outdoor hike! She will discuss contemporary flora and fauna found at Chucalissa and springtime ecology through a historical lens. Appropriate for all ages.

We will be doing artifact sorting and bag painting indoors all day from 9am to 2pm for those that wish to participate in dirt-free activities.

Please wear comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes for all activities. No previous experience or sign-up is necessary to attend this event. Children are most welcome with adult supervision.

If you have any questions about Spring Family Fun Day, please contact Katie Maish at kjthmpsn@memphis.edu or (901)785-3160 ext. 12.

Exciting Updates in Store for Choctaw Exhibits

Members of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw in Philadelphia, Mississippi are currently busily updating eight panels and two exhibit cases at Chucalissa! These exhibits describe contemporary Choctaw culture including language, games, basket weaving, information about the Choctaw members living in the southern United States including census information and much more.

They will also include information about cultural values that have evolved since the time these exhibits were originally created. For instance, the idea of self determination has been a critical concept in contemporary Choctaw culture for a long time, but it has become even more important in recent years. These values will be accurately reflected in the exhibits on display at the C.H. Nash Museum. To find out more about this concept and much more, be sure to stop by any time after April 15 to see the completed renovations!
