Delta 5 AmeriCorps NCCC Team at Chucalissa

Chucalissa Hosts Our 5th AmeriCorps Team

This past spring the C.H. Nash Museum hosted our 5th AmeriCorps NCCC team.  Typically, our museum host NCCC teams that work on projects at the museum and in the Southwest Memphis community.  However, the Delta 5 Team was co-sponsored by the City of Memphis and the C.H. Nash Museum.  We are very pleased that this expansion means even more opportunities for AmeriCorps service throughout the Memphis area.  The Delta 5 Team assisted the city in preparing public swimming pools for the summer and creating urban gardens for elderly city residents.  At Chucalissa, Delta 5 built several pieces of equipment that will be installed in our upgraded Brister Archaeology Discovery Center this fall.  We look forward to collaborating with the City of Memphis on future AmeriCorps Teams. Take a look at our Director's recent blog post for more information about this new collaborative.

Summer Camp with Freedom Prep School

For the past couple of years, one of the most consistent group of participants in Chucalissa’s Monthly Volunteer Saturdays are students from Freedom Preparatory High School, located just down the street from Chucalissa. As a next step in the relationship between the two institutions, Chucalissa is hosting a series of Internship Camps for Freedom Prep students this summer! The camps focus on upgrading the current African American Cultural Heritage of Southwest Memphis exhibit and the associated website using a co-creative process.  From June 10th to July 30th, 22 students will participate and gain skills in a variety of fields such as oral history collection, video editing, website design, event planning, exhibit design and archeology. The students will also coordinate the logistics for an open house event, showcasing their experiences and African-American Cultural Heritage exhibit.

Meet Melissa Buchner, Administrative Associate

So, tell us a little bit about yourself!

I am a University of Memphis alumna and have worked at the UofM for over 20 years in a variety of administrative and research positions.

What are your career goals?
At the moment I am getting settled into Chucalissa and learning the ropes here.  One of the nice things about working at a small museum is the opportunity to develop a broad range of skills.

What are your hobbies?
My husband Drew and I enjoy traveling, especially to visit our grandson in Miami.  We are rabid Tiger fans and attend all the home football and basketball games.  We enjoy going to road games whenever possible.

What is your favorite museum?
It’s hard to say--pretty much depends on where I went last.  Near the top of the list would have to be the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.  Crystal Bridges in Benton, Arkansas, is fabulous.  Locally, the Dixon is always a great choice with high quality exhibits and the gorgeous gardens.

Tell us one weird but true fact about yourself.
I was once a tap dancing bumblebee.  It was a long time ago. Unfortunately, photographic evidence still exists.

What kind of things do you hope to do at Chucalissa?
The possibilities here are pretty much limitless.  I am especially excited about my duties as volunteer coordinator which provide the opportunity to work with new people all the time.  Educational programs at the museum are constantly being updated and expanded. There is something new to learn every day!

& Emily Neal, Administrative Assistant

So, tell us a little bit about yourself!
I first visited Chucalissa in 2009 and have been involved with the museum off and on since then as a volunteer, intern, and temporary employee. I’m excited to join as a full-time member of the team!

What are your career goals?
I hope to combine my love of museums and travel, and get involved with many different kinds of projects at museums around the world.

What are your hobbies?
I’m something of an amateur artist. I enjoy anything that allows me to create, especially photography and bead-weaving.

What is your favorite museum?
Probably one of the Smithsonian museums. I prefer working in a smaller museum where I can get to know the visitors, but I’ll always love wandering through those huge buildings filled with fascinating artifacts from across the globe.

Tell us one weird but true fact about yourself.
I was born into a love of history. My parents met during a Civil War reenactment and I participated in my first living history event as an infant at the Carter House in Franklin, TN.

What kind of things do you hope to do at Chucalissa?
Learn as much as I can! My favorite part of working here is the chance to collaborate with people from all different fields and talk to visitors from Memphis to China. I learn something new every day!
