and a bountiful
            New Year.

With deep gratitude for your ongoing support of our programs,

      The Friends of Seva Mandir

Dear Friends,
The reach of Seva Mandir, one of India’s most respected development NGOs, continues to extend well beyond its initial focus on literacy. Today, the organization facilitates a variety of programs related to local governance and democracy, maternal and child health, employment and livelihoods, women’s empowerment, environmental conservation and, of course, education.

School attendance is a challenge in the tribal regions of Rajasthan. Families rely on children for farm labor at home or may send children away to work in factories to supplement household income. Public schools are typically lacking and located a great distance from these communities.

Seva Mandir’s 170 local village schools serve over 6,000 children who might otherwise not receive an education. Residential learning camps offer a way for children who have not attended school to catch up. After three 60-day intensive learning sessions, children are able to enter school at their appropriate grade level.

For children ages 1-5 years, Seva Mandir also manages 200 Balwadis (daycare centers) that provide a safe nurturing environment —along with two healthy meals daily— setting the expectation to continue in school while allowing women to work with less worry.

As one young mother, Urmila Devi, explained, “The Balwadi has many benefits. My son has learned how to eat, how to talk, about hygiene. Earlier I used to have to take him with me to the forest, agricultural fields, or stay at home. I could not go to work. How could I?” And another parent, Babudi Bai, echoed, “I used to carry my child to the field wherever I was working. Now he can be in Balwadi until 4PM and I know he will be taken care of.”

One program administrator, Hiralal Patel, elaborated on the communal foundations of the program, “After village forum meetings, the committee decides if the villages need a Balwadi or not. They also select the location, select the teacher and make contributions to support the program."

These are just a few examples of Seva Mandir’s program successes that have lifted the lives of some of the world’s neediest citizens and it has only been possible thanks to you and your ongoing support.
Please consider including Friends of Seva Mandir in your year-end giving plans so that we may help Seva Mandir continue its most impactful work.
In gratitude,
Bridget Taylor and Bonnie Stockwell

          to GIVE and GET!

Are you planning a trip to India this winter?

The MountBattan Lodge, Ranakpur, has donated a 3-night stay for two to Friends of Seva Mandir. One of Rajasthan's most coveted luxury accommodations, the Mountbatten Lodge is set in the shadow of the Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary, a natural habitat for sloth bears, barking deer and elusive leopards. It is a convenient base from which to explore the Wildlife Sanctuary and two of India's most important historical sights, the exquisite Ranakpur Temple and the majestic Kumbhalgarh Fort (famous for having the second longest wall after the great wall of China, both shown below). Each of the lodge's four suites is elegantly decorated and offers spectacular views of the surrounding lush vegetation and majestic Aravalli hills. A visit with lunch at Seva Mandir in nearby Udaipur is included! Your travel must take place before April 1, 2019. If you would like to make a donation to Friends of Seva Mandir in exchange for this opportunity, please contact us at
