Patients waiting at a mobile clinic
We are now working with five partners running mobile clinics which offer basic healthcare and the chance for women to choose family planning. When a couple are able to decide how many children they would like to have the life chances of the whole family can be improved. Existing children are much more likely to be better nourished, and with fewer children the girls in the family stand a better opportunity of going to secondary school. Education is a key to leaving poverty behind. I am sure many of you have enjoyed the wonderful Planet Earth 2 series. David Attenborough is one of the few public figures to raise the issue of how the human population is changing the natural world. It seems extraordinary, when family planning is so cheap to provide that there are over 220 million women in the world with an unmet need for contraception. By meeting that need whole communities can be given the chance to escape poverty, and the natural world will be under less pressure. This gives other wildlife, who we share this precious planet with, space in which to live.
Children amongst trees that they have planted
Our school tree planting project began 14 years ago. During the next rains we'll be planting at another 10 schools. Growing timber in schools takes pressure off the remainng indigenous forest. Some of the first schools planted are beginning to harvest their trees. This year, 15 schools earned a combined total of over £30,000 by selling their timber.
Some schools have used the timber they have grown to build new classrooms. It’s very encouraging to think that trees planted and cared for by one generation of children are giving another generation the chance of a new classroom and a better learning environment.
